One less Speed Goat on the Santa Fe Trail
« on: September 01, 2007, 04:51:21 PM »
Better than cartoons on a Saturday morning!  Thirty miles outside Springer, NM, on the north edge of the Santa Fe trail.
.22-250 @ 250 yards, more or less for the first shot - saw dirt fly behind, thought I missed, chambered another round as he ran towards me.  He stopped, I shot him again, he took off again.  When I looked up from chambering the third round, he was down.  I had yanked the first shot to the right - still through the ribs, pretty far back, it exited through the lower abdomen.  The second round went in just behind the shoulder.

Larry,

I made medallions from the backstraps, the quarters go to the processor on Tuesday for sausage...

They aren't very big - I got about 20 lbs of meat after we boned him out.

Congrats!! We are set to go to NE WY next month for Antelope/Mule Deer. I was amazed to see old stuff like your pic setting around, we see that in WY. too. In AR, that stuff would rot to the ground in no time with our humidity.
You will not make peace with the Bluecoats, you are free to go.

Good job , ought to be some good eats , just how many trips did it take to get the blind in place tho .  ;D I would have liked to get out west this fall for pronghorn but work is keeping me this side of the Mississippi again .  >:(

The blind has been parked there since sometime in the 70's... None of the children wanted to work the land, so active farming ceased quite some time ago.  The pastures are leased to a neighboring ranch, there's usually 50 - 80 calves on the place from spring to fall. There's a couple more implements parked by the old barn and grainary that may get moved into the south pasture next spring to provide another shooting "bench" on that end of the place.  We saw a larger rack down on the south end when scouting, but there's not much cover down there to hunt from, so I opted to use what was available in the north pasture.
