OT- Skunk Attack Last Night
« on: September 01, 2007, 06:37:52 AM »
My golden retriever can't get up or down stairs anymore as he is 13 years old and suffers from a bit of arthritis. So last night I was on the way to the back door walk-out in pitch black with him on a leash and he cornered and caught a skunk without me being able to prevent it. He didn't hang on to it long though. What an absolutely over-powering smell!!!! It completely over-whelmed me and I backed up FAST. I thought I had been hit with a chemical of some sort not skunk as I didn't immediately recognize what had happened. It was so strong all I could smell and taste until I later finally got to sleep was skunk!

I don't think he will try that again.

Yeah, Most people realize that they stink driving by at 60mph,
but if you are close when they first spray it's more pain than smell.

One of my dogs played with a skunk up in PA once. I was sure dreading the trip back home. One of the workers gave me a spray bottle of something he used he used on his trapline to kill the smell. Worked great, but I don't know what it was. Maybe another member can help. It was commercial, not homemade.

They make a product called odercide that works very well. I have one dog that will stick her nose up a skunks back side every chance she gets. You would think she would learn OH NO. When  we where first married We lived in a small mobile home and the dogs caught one uinder the trailer at about 2:00 AM on a very hot summer night. Talk about gag a maggot. Wow!! My only though was I hoped they didn't Kill it under there I sure didin't want to have to crawl under there and retrive that. Man the place stunk for weeks.

From another board:

The Best Recipe For Skunks I Have Ever Used.

1-Two cups of Hydrogen Pyroxide
2-1/4 to 1/2 Cup of Baking Soda.
3-One Tablespoon of Dish Soap

Put in a spray bottle and mix then spray it on the area and rub in.(Keep it away from the eyes/mouth and ears)Then just wash it off really good and there is no after smell or nothing..She smells better now than before she got Skunked!

About the dog's arthritus, are you treating with anything? Some folks are recommending up to 2000mg vitamin C and glucosine. I am using doses of both for my Springer. Don't know if it's helping him a lot or a little.

About 10 years ago or so our German Shepperd got a hold of one. It was late at night and I was in bed sleeping and all of the sudden I was woke up with the strongest smell I have ever smelt. It woke me out of a sound sleep. It was my wife thring to give him a bath in the tub next door to the bedroom. It took a long time for that smell to go away.  Dale

Thanks everyone for your help. We used the hydrogen peroxide and baking soda formula. It helps allot, we'll do it again tomorrow. We are treating the dogs hip with Metacam an NSAID and something to settle his stomach as it tends to irritate it. It works very well and only costs $125.00 per month-------------he's worth it though-- he's my pal.

Thanks again guys!!!!!!!
