Cheek Pad for Hunting Rifle
« on: August 29, 2007, 05:43:32 AM »
I just bought a cheek pad for my hunting rifle.  Are there any shooters out there that have experience with one?  I ordered one form BlackHawk.  My friend who is a SEAL swears by them.  I have never used them but plan on giving it a try this deer season.

I use a Uncle Mikes Neoprene shell holder with some Rube-a-tex foam insulation under it...It has always worked for me...

Why do you want a cheek pad?  What is it suppose to do?  Is it cosmetic?

No...not cosmetic.....A good cheek pad will also remove all of the face slap...It will allow a firmer cheek weld which can lead to better consistency and accuracy.....I've used them on my rifles and shotguns for years..

I've owned a gun or two that slapped me in the face an old SKB built Ithaca imported O/U in 20 gauge was one of the worst. My friend's in 12 gauge was just plain wicked ugly to shoot and left his face bloody if he shot much. My 20 wasn't quite as bad but was way more than I wanted. When I encounter such a gun I let someone else own it. I'd rather not worry about getting slapped in the face every shot I fire it's a sign that the manufacturer didn't properly understand how to make guns.

Blackhawk pads work. The comfort depends on which BlackHawk pad you got. The lace up less expensive model with a ridge running up works fine but it is not as comfortable and for me is better deployed on an M1A or Saiga. The velcro strap models are more comfortable especially in prone ( Eagle also makes a nice pad) and have a pouch to carry a few extras. Speaking of dimpled cheek pads this is what can happen when you do not take care of your equipment -
