T/C Icon & .30 TC
« on: August 23, 2007, 10:29:27 AM »
I have just read several articles on The new TC Icon rifle and the equally new 30 TC cartridge. The cartridge appears to have a case capacity similar to the old 300 Savage but by using something akin to Hornady's Light Magnum technology gets exterior balistics equal to top end 30-06 handloads. It is a beautiful and accurate rifle and a technically interesting cartridge but I just can't see it succeding commercially. The lighter recoil and flat trajectory are an attractive combination but the impossibility of achieving anything close to factory ballistics with hand-loads and a proprietary cartridge would seem to doom it. Look at Dakota Arms. I think this forum is the best place on the web for this discussion so I just wanted to kick it off. What do you folks think?

The Icon seems to be an accurate shooter but I think the .30 TC is pointless and will be gone in a couple years.  What's the point in a whole new case configuration to do what high end .308's do?  $$$$ for TC, that's it in my opinion.  Brett

The whole idea of rounds such as the .30 TC or the .308 Marlin are planned obsolence. They hit with a huge splash and the gun rag writers tout them to high heaven knowing lots of folks will buy anything the rag writers say and/or anything new that hits the shelves. Still the makers KNOW in advance such rounds will be commercial failures and that soon enough ammo, factory ammo at least will be nonexistent and those folks will again soon enough be in need of another new gun. That's how the factories make their money.

I'm kinda in that boat, won't be getting a 30TC, but I have a 270WSM, 300WSM, 338 Federal, and a 6.8 Rem. I really enjoy these new rounds, don't really need them, but I'm a gun nut...........

From the cartridges that you have, I don't think that you will have to worry about the .300 WSM or the .338 Federal going away.  The other two, maybe.

I agree about the .30 TC.  I think it is a great concept, but I don't think it will last.

I feel that the 270wsm will stick. Most every gun manufactors are adding models to their list. Even Midway USA has 17 differant fac loadings for it listed, up from about 5 last year.
the 300wsm will stay mainlly due to 30cal. fans. The338 federal is IMHO a "bubble round due to the 338wm being so heavilly rooted.

The 30TC has a chance IMHO due to it being a short action. The Icon won't carry it, but the  encore fans may due to not being able to get the wsm chamberings.(FACTORY)
