Whelen musings, or insane ramblings-not sure which.
« on: August 21, 2007, 09:06:58 AM »
I recently bought an unfired 35 Whelen barrel from a member here.  I'm one of the unfortunate ones on this one.  It misfires about half the time, reloads or factory.  My thought is this-can a larger expander be run thru the brass, and then the brass run thru a whelen die to create a false shoulder at the appropriate spot.  I realize that from this point on, the brass will have to be neck sized only, with just a bump on the shoulder to resize it til it will chamber OK in the Handi action.  I tried a couple, using a 375 H&H die to expand the cases, and the just resize til they will just barely chamber.  Looks like it will work great.  Thoughts and suggestions?

Yes that generally works. It's a fairly common fix for TCs in .35 Remington that misfire regularly. In that case a .375 Winchester die is normally used.

Sure Danny, been there, done it with my 280 Improved Handi and 375H&H Encore, see "Handloading for an Improved Chambered Handi" in the Misc Info section of the FAQs.  ;)

my RMEF in 35whelen would misfire about 2 in a box of 20. U neck sized the ones that fired  reloaded and they did get all went bang. I also own a ren classic in 35Whelen  I fires a hundred rounds  I shot at  some  woodchucks at so silly ranges took that brass that is now fire formed with a better shoulder and full lenght sizes reloaded  fired them in my RMEF all went bang  now I only neck size.  The main problem is  the Remington ammo and the other factory ammo don;t have a pronounced shoulder  in  a bolt gun the extractor will hold the round and it will fire fine ane form to the chamber. there is about 2 or 3 camberings  out there for a Whelen before Remington it  was  basically a wild cat
