My first try at painting my Stevens 200

Well ,
     i'm not saying its a perfect job ( several paint runs) but how much can you hurt a rifle/scope combo that cost me $225 new 2 years ago.I started with a tan primer coat (this is where i applied too much paint and got runs) and finished off with hunter green and flat black.I used vegetation from my yard to stencil the leaves/ferns.I couldn't find the shades of krylon fusion that i wanted but settled on these.I think it came out ok except for the runs which i plan on wet sanding with 800 grit.

You guys are too kind.I only posted the pics that didnt show off the two paint runs in their worst light.But ,now i know .Take your time ,go slow and dont apply too much paint too soon.I still plan on putting a real scope (Nikon with BDC ) on her and adding a shock absorbing buttplate before i take her out to Wyoming next fall ( 2008) for antelope.A 30-06 might be overkill for them but hey ,im a newlywed and I'm lucky to be going at all....lol

Make sure the paint is thoroughly dry before sanding. It could take a week or longer before dry especially if it is thick. If it is not dry it will ball up under your sand paper. I know, it happened to me. Also even though you can handle it, let it dry for a week before use so that it will not chip off. I know because that happened to me too. ::)  I think it looks good, I bet the deer or coyote will not know the difference. ;D

                  Yup ,gotcha. Let mine dry 4 days.Krylon fusion recommends 72 hrs for "no chipping". I'll spend an hour on it this friday and she should be all ready to go in a week.
P.S. who needs bolts ?

I wet sanded out my paint runs as best i could and touched up the problem areas.I can now live with the results ,ready for deer season in NY.

That looks like one heck of a good paint job to me.  It gives it the personalized touch that every gun needs.  Looks good.

 ; ;D Shooter it sure looks good to me! I wasn't going to get a Stevens until a guy I hunt with picked up one in 223 and watched him shoot MOA right out of the box. He was using Remy 55gr sp and it shot lights out. Now I have changed my mine and think a 25-06, 7mm-08, 243 and 223 or 22-250. I plan to work the triggers and do exactly as you did and camo each rifle. My rifle battery will be Handi's, 200's and my large caliber 308 will be in a Weatherby Vanguard or the Howa. Looks good! Don't like aloyt of recoil and my big animal is Elk and think 165gr TSX will ge the jib done just fine. Jess

       I dont think you can go wrong with this rifle.Its a great ,inexpensive rifle that you wouldn't mind getting scratched up while going through the briars.I got mine really cheap.I've now taken two deer in two years ,a doe at 225 yrds and a 7 pointer at 50 yrds.Both one shot kills with federal 165 gr 30-06 factory loads sighted in 2 inches high at 100 yrds.If all goes well it will follow me out to Wyoming fall of 2008 for a 3 day antelope hunt and if that doesnt happen and i change my mind ,it will be going to maine on a bear hunt.Either way its a very accurate rifle.Before painting it,use some 800 grit paper and sand down all the rough seams.I hung mine from the ceiling in my garage via fishing line and the sling studs.You may want to drop a weight from the lower stud via fishing line to keep the rifle from spinning while you try to spray paint it.

  You did fine...i wish i had done so good with my "self-camoed" rifles...

   One should never underestimate the out-of-the-box accuracy of those Savage/Stevens centerfires...

I painted mine with Krylon Fusion. The paint melted where I got sunscreen on it from my cheek.. I will redo it and use a clear coat and see if that works.
