Commie Whisper report
« on: August 19, 2007, 10:10:04 AM »
I finally got out the 7.62X39 barrel that I bought over a year ago.  I must be one of the lucky ones.  Mine shot Wolf, Barnaul, and my 123 gr. reloads with nary a misfire, hesitation, or problem.  Next is to work up a load with the 180 gr. Rem. RN bullets, and then on to some 170 and 210 gr cast bullets that I have horse traded for over the years.  I figured the Russian stuff would be just an exercise in futility, but so far I'm surprised.  Groups with my reloads were about an inch and a half at 75 yds, but for shooting off of the deck rail and sitting in a lawn chair on 2 pillows, I was pleased.  More details and hundred yard groups to follow later, right now it's off to SC tomorrow for a little 100 degree deer hunting.

I got bored one day and measured and weighed a bunch of black box Wolf, MC Wolf, and Golden Tiger.  The powder weights were very inconsistent, but bullet weights and OAL's were pretty good.  I can't find the chart that I made.  I reloaded 5 of each using electronic scale and trusty Lee dies.  Going to try them in SKS just for grins.  Never having a 30/30, I think that the 7.62x39 is about my favorite cartridge right now.

This project is in line behind:

Solve the 357/360DW problems (used O-ring and file, will see)

Verify zero 7-08 with 165 SGK
Shoot groups 7-08 with 120 SP

Verify zero 223 with 55 Black Hills SP

Zero 270 for 150 SP
Shoot groups 270 with 130 SP
(trying to find a winner)

Daniel,
What are you using to flare the case mouth for the lead bullets?

I've got a set of the Lee Universal Flaring dies.  M dies would be better, but these work.  You could also use a loaded 8MM or 35 caliber bullet to hand flare them.  Just enough to get the bullet started without shaving lead works OK.  Hope this helps.

I am using a 338 bullet and I have used a set of needle nose pliers.  I need to get a die to be more consistent.
