Smith & Wesson 59?

I am presently looking into buying an S & W 59 for home defense and casual plinking. Anyone have any experience, likes/dislikes with these? I have read that these had an Aluminum frame, but this one is Nickle plated, could it still have an Al. frame?

Check it with a magnet. I owned SEVERAL Model 59s, all in stainless 659. Defended myself with one against a couple of pit bulls, and one chow at  very close range. Hit where I aimed it multiple times in all three cases. Sold it the next day, after the third encounter. All of mine over the years were very reliable, although the transition from double action to single action, and back to safe, MUST BE PRACTICED, until it becomes second nature, or it is a very dangerous condition under stress.

Thanks for the info.

Have you or anyone else out there ever have a member of the opposite sex shoot one? Can a woman operate one or are the too: wide? power-full?

Part of my job before retirement was to teach civilian women handgun safety and self defense. I bought my wife one of these, and several other women brought them to my range. All had problems with the double stack grips being a little big for their hands. It would depend on the stature of the woman.

I had a 59 back in 1975, never again. if you insist on having a S&W auto get a 3rd Generation . they are nice pistols. if there's a small haned person going to use it  a double stacker might be to big in the grips so you might need a 3900 series. Make sure everyone that might have to use it has the ability to rack the slide some folks just can't do it.  So you might consider a good revolver.

Savorino, when I gave you my opinion of the 59, and stated they were faillures, I was refering to the 9mm. If it was in a forty, it would be nice with the same restrictions on size for women, and the trigger action.
