Just be in shape long before the season opener.

I quit elk hunting because of the "fun" involved with getting the animal out of the woods, I'm just not in good enough shape to walk 5-10 miles a day, then pack 350- 500lbs of meat out.

Dragging a deer out isn't much easier, but the distances are usually much less where I hunt, and I always have my son and huntin partner to help!

Try Caribou or Moose!!!!!!!!!!! Or really go for the full blowen limit try for Goat or Sheep, Coronary peoblems are the least of their worries.

Sad to say,but lifestyles are hard on hunters.The last sentence pretty well sums it up.Over the last 40 years we've become an overweight out of shape nation,and its only gettin worse.Don't believe it just take a drive past any high school,or now even grade school and look at the weight these kids are packing at such young ages.Hell when I grew up we were all skinny,and very active in all kinds of weather.A heavy set kid was rare and were even made fun of.I noticed over the last 20 years when driving to work,it is rare to see kids out at all,and even the adults have dissappeared!So doesn't surprise me at all when a hunter that is sedentary all year long has heart or health problems brought on when out hunting.JMO

Ya think!!! What a wonderful piece of science work this is!

Doesn't matter if it is hunting or whatever the physical activity might be, you need to be in shape for it, if you decide this is the sport you want to take part in. Like dw06 said, most folks are out of shape, it is not the fault of hunting. I think these folks are looking for yet another reason for people to stop hunting & they are not worried that so many are out of shape overall. If this article has any purpose for us at all, it might be used as a reminder that we should exercise BEFORE hunting season.

Yep! Exercise BEFORE hunting season. But now I take my 30 year old son with me. I am the official stump-sitter---------------and I don't do any of the lugging or lifting anymore. Also I am going to be choosy about my next deer. its going to have to be a bigun' for me to want to shoot it. By the way. I have had two heart attacks and open-heart surgery and believe me it is worth avoiding!!!!!!!!!!!!,

I have been walking to get myself a little more ready for hunting season. Hard to do with a set of bum knees and a messed up back. I just put the dog on the leash and start walking. One of the reasons I get a bear tag is so I can work my way up into the woods (without the dog, but with a gun). Gets some varied terrain into the mix. I'm not in sprinters shape, but it lets me know what I am able to do, and helps me be a little less winded. (Plus it is a great way to loose the stress of the day).

Up until 6 month ago or so, I did 30 minutes a day of the treadmill, but knee problems curtailed that for a while, now I'm back up to 4 days a week which doesn't seem to aggravate the knees too much, yet I still get the benefit of some decent excercise. Now if the foot problems don't get in the way, I'll be ok!! $:-\$

I am presently doing 4 work outs a week on the tread-mill. I set the desired heart rate(weight loss only for now) and the machine keeps me in the 'slot'. 30 minutes is a good start but I hope to gradually increase the intensity and time so that I can get some cardio strengthening. That requires quite an intense work out with the right heart rate(higher) for 45 minutes, burning about 600 calories.

I sore-up my hip if I over-do it but am determined to be ready for a 'healthy' hunt come November.

Here is my new exercizing machine. Taken me about 85h and 5 weeks to put together. With both my knees still mending and walking is quite slow, I decided to get back into paddling while at the lake. I should be able to do
4-5 mile in an hour with this very fast boat and not kill myself.
Just completed the boat yesterday. Today I was to take it out but I did not feel
like paddling in the rain. This is a Pygmy Coho Sea Kayak made from a kit.

The design weight is 38lbs, Length 17.5ft. Beam 23.5". 4mm Marine plywood
fiberglass reinforced epoxy lamination inside and outside.

Note this boat is only for young fellows like me. ha??? If you get what I mean.

I hunted hard all of my life,elk moose,mountain sheep,bears, and antelope.I thought up and down mountains was a great hunt.
Now I want a dry doe mule deer in a alfalfa field I can drive the truck to after she is gutted, and with enough help to load the truck.LOL Doug

Getting old is so much fun. I gave up deer hunting a few years ago when I decided I wasn't tough enough anymore. Living all you life at 4000' on flat ground does not do much for endurance in the mountains.

Guys keep up the exercising we are doing whatever it is! Even just getting out and walking each day is a help, but the more intense you can do it the better. Mc is right, after open heart surgery you just don't want to ever do that again! I am exercising two-three times per week now 16 mos. after surgery and am trying to pick up the pace to 3-4 times per week. It will get us in better shape for hunting, but will more importantly keep us in shape for living.

Tough on Hunter a little heart trouble, x2 on getting in shape before my summer program did not work out too well but I am catching up I got caught off guard by a surprise moose tag.

But you want to talk tough. This pass weekend a bow hunter was out doing some scouting in Northern Alberta (Grand Prairie) and he got between a sow grizzly and her cubs while she was chewing he had the wits about him to kill her with his knife. Oddly the way the report was worded it seemed the writer had expected the guy to sacrifice himself since we have a lot more people than bears.

GRANDE PRAIRIE -- Grande Prairie wildlife officials are on the lookout for three orphaned grizzly bear cubs after a knife-toting bow hunter killed a female grizzly that attacked him Wednesday night.

The hunter, a man in his 30s, encountered the mother grizzly and her cubs just before 9:30 p.m., while he was scouting locations in a backwoods are for upcoming bowhunting season.

The man is recovering from serious injuries in hospital.

He defended himself using a hunting knife and was able to get away despite suffering serious arm and elbow injuries, officials said.

The mother grizzly suffered three stab wounds inflicted by the hunter's knife and succumbed to her injuries, said Alberta Fish and Wildlife spokesman Darcy Whiteside. Her body was found 27 metres from where the attacked occurred.

"She died pretty quick," he said.

Fish and Wildlife believe the three bear cubs are still in the area. If they are caught, they will be taken to a more remote area.

"Traps have been set up Thursday but they haven't been caught as of this morning," said Whiteside.

Fred nice boat, building one is on my to do before I die list, but it would be a river drift boat. Though working my car topper down the bow is a lot more work.

Yes that is the sort of form I am looking for.

I already have these plans but it is a fairly complicated built https://www.boatdesigns.com/products.asp?dept=471

After I bought those plans I ran across a more free form system for building dories which is what a river boat basically is. what I like about the system is you can practice in miniature then scale it up.
