I prefer WW296 in the 44 Mag over H110 and have several good loads with different bullets but they are for full power use only.  It's outstanding in a rifle but I also use in a 4 inch 41 Mag and muzzle flash/blast is massive.  I have also used 296 in the 45 LC Ruger but recoil was more than I wanted to bear.  I think it meters better than H110 and pressures seem lower as case extraction is relatively easy considering the charges.  I like Blue Dot for loads that produce 70-80% of max velocity and are more comfortable to shoot plus it's good with lead bullets in my revolvers.

I was told they are the inerchangable.  I think I heard that first from John Linebaugh.  I was told that the lot factor is what is different.  The 296 is held to higher standards than the H110 for consistance.   All that said I have been using H110 because it is cheaper here.

They are both the same exact powder, made in the same mill to the same specs.

Everything that I have heard is that they are the same.  Also try Lil-Gun.

I contacted Hodgdon about this this morning, to get the answer straight from the horses mouth so to speak. Their response is that they are identical. Any differences you see between H110 and 296 are the same that you would see between different lots of powder.

I also second HoCoMDHunter's suggestion of trying Lil'Gun. It's been great in heavy 45 Colt loads for me.

Try 1680 as well, especially in the Encore.
