Is 30-30 AI worth the trouble?
« on: June 04, 2003, 08:54:45 AM »
I have the lever action bug and after seeing all the cheap Marlins in 30-30 I wonder if getting on and improving it would be worth the effort. From data I have seen published it is only capable of 2,600 fps. with 130 gr. bullets. I have heard it is almost able to hit .300 Savage velocity but havn't seen the load data to back it up. There are lots of used Marlin barrels around so it would be simple to swap back if necessary

Now Chuck if you could find an old Savage M99 in 30-30 that would be an excellent project!  Cheap and easily available ammo....sounds too good.

savageT........Have you hugged a '99 lately?

Not sure of the Marlin or the AI but with my Winchester M94 Legacy I safely get 2782 fps with the Speer 130 FP and 2550 fps with the Winchester of Speer 150 FPs.  With older guns the AI might be the way to go and keep pressures down.
