Food Plot

Has anyone set up a food plot for deer?  What did you use, and how did it turn out?  Id like to set one up, but Im unsure what to get.

kb - I set one up a few years ago and although it looked good for the first year it got overgrown by the neighboring flora and looked just like everything else in that corner of the field.  I forget exactly what I seeded it with but I got the bag of seeds from Cabelas.  It must have worked because the critters all came in at night and ate it all.  Smart critters dang it........................

If you have the land about the easiest way to put in a food plot is simply cut the grasses or the corner of a field where you're going to hunt - the new growth is their browse and they will go for it.  I also understand that they go crazy for Rye. 

Down in the Landowners Forum there is a recent thread on Mineral licks/salt licks that might be of some help and I know they have other threads there about food plots.  Maybe that would help you.  Mikey.

I harvested my first ever bow kill over my first plot last year (Imperial Clover and generic rape). They ate it to the ground. This year, I have planted over two acres in two different spots (a mixture of rye, wheat, clover, turnips, and a ton of other stuff). It is getting regular use, according to my trail cam. My advice is to read labels and test your soil ph. The rest is work, but it can be rewarding.

The deer have been hammering the plots lately. And early bow just a few weeks away....Can't wait!
