PMC Brass!?
« on: June 04, 2003, 04:13:41 AM »
I had some PMC 223's, that were shot in my single shot rifle, that I tried to reload yesterday.  I neck sized them with my Lee Collet die, and had no problems, except that the primers took considerable force to be pushed out.  After cleaning the primer pockets I loaded a primer or two, then the trouble started.  The primers wouldn't go in very easily so I took a knife and tried to clean out the edge of the pocket.  Many primers were deformed after being seated and I just quit after about seven rounds and threw them out.  I had always heard that PMC brass was good to reload and I had never heard about them having crimped-in primers.

Anyone else have these primers?

BTW:  Didn't hurt my die at all. :)

Moose,

the Korean-manufactured PMC .223 ammunition is a side line of the factory that also makes ammunition for the Korean military and  far eastern markets.  The factory was set up under Winchester-Western technical advisors, I believe.

Those crimped-in primer pockets are standard for MILITARY-SPECIFICATION ammunition in 5.56mm NATO (.223), 7.62 NATO (.308 Winchester), and .50 BMG calibers.  The primer crimp serves to prevent primers backing out in full-auto fire guns and causing jams.

Yes, the fired cases ARE reloadable, but you need either a primer pocket swaging tool (used in your sizing press), or a hand-held primer pocket reamer to cut it out.  You can do a job with a sharp pocket knife, but it's a lot of work.

Other than the primer pocket crimp, the brass is perfectly good for reloading.

I reload the PMC mil-spec brass and have been very happy with it. One must however go thru the standard rigormorall of swaging the primer pockets beforehand, that's all.

Once done, they work just fine!

Had some PMC 44 Mag brass (100 rnds) about 5 years ago that had all their flash holes off center. As I didn't have a Bench Rest rifle built for this caliber I didn't think too much about it.
