3 parts I've been looking for forever.
« on: August 08, 2007, 04:24:16 AM »
I have had  3 guns in the shop that need parts for the last 6 monthes. I would pay good money for these little pieces. Hopefully someone out there knows where I might find one or more of them.
1. Cocking lever spring from Shuer & Sohn model 380 chambered in 32ACP.

2. Top cover (or ejection port cover) for a Winchester 55. The "single shot automatic".

3.Rear sight windage screw for a Browning 1910, post 69 I think. Chambered in 380.  I may be off on the model number.

Thanks for any help. Needless to say I've checked the regular sources.  greer

Any gunsmith worthy of the title should be able to fabricate the spring and screw easily enough. There are many suppliers of basic springs and I'm sure all it would take is to cut one down to correct length if it's not available from one of those sources in the exactly correct length. Screw making is I believe a very basic machinist/gunsmithing procedure that anyone with a lathe should be able to handle for you. Unless that source in the link has the little top cover tho that bugger should be some kinda difficult to locate and not so easy to fabricate. Those are nice little rifles. My cousin had one in the days of our youth that shot the Winchester rat shot almost as if it were a choked shotgun.

Thanks for the replies. The sight screw would be fairly difficult to make, for me at least. It is a small screw that tapers down from the head and the threaded portion is tiny. The spring for the Shuer and Sohn is also a tricky looking little bugger with a bends going different directions and a half loop or two. Thanks again, I'll contact those two sources.            greer

For the Browining I would contact Browning first. It's not likely they would have the part but may know of a supplier. Springs can be made but it is best if a broken part is available for comparison. Most old guns have no parts drawings or specs available and it may well be cost prohibitive to try making and fitting replacements. The M55 top cover is plastic and they break commonly. If you've an original I have used them to make molds and casted replacements from AcraGlass. With glass fiber re-enforcement they were likely as strong as the original. Still you will need the broken part or an unbroken example to make the mold. The auto pistol is likely a Sauer&son model but I am not certain.. You will need exact model/maker/caliber info when searching for some of those parts.. You may wish to contact Wisners. at the link below. They can make most parts and will do one of a kind builds. They are far from cheap but then that is relative if no other parts sources are found..

Thanks for the reply. The pistol says J.P. Shuer & Sohn And I believe it is a Model 38 in .32 ACP. It's a well made pistol that was brought back from WWII. Maybe something German officers carried.

I don't have the cover from the Winchester and didn't know they were made of plastic. That decision was a bad one. I've already talked to Wisner's and they didn't offer that reproduction. I'll call Browning and see what they say.  Thanks again.

Do you have they broken parts to the M55 top cover? It is possible to cast a replacement that will work. There is little stress on the part.. Any idea of the thread pitch/diameter for the screw..have you the damaged screw?

The rifle came to me without the top cover. The pistol actually was in the shop for another problem and while test firing the  sight adj. screw came out and was lost in the grass. I do still have the other one.  I pushed that magnetic picker upper thing around for an hour and found everything but that screw.  The major dia of the threaded portion is .082. I think it is a 2x56 thread with a steep taper up to a much larger head.  I'll do what we have to do many times and just improvise I guess. It's a nice collector peice and I thought a factory part would be better, same with the Winchester. I checked with some of the sources mentioned above and still no luck.  Thanks. greer

That seems to be it except for the spelling. This says "J.P. SHUER & SOHN, SUHL with no model designation.  Part # 33 is the little bugger I've been looking for. Jack First actually sent me the spring but it was broken also. That was a let down. After I sent it back they said they didn't have another one.
I did fly in a make the windage screw for the Browning yesterday. I sure needed my OptiVisor for that one. Thanks.   greer

I've attached a link to a Browning 380(post 69) which is likely what your 380 is. I would think GunParts would have a sight screw for something like this. Perhaps the nomenclature was the problem..? Also Browning in St.Louis should have some parts for the 380(t) you seem to have. I'd try their customer service and tell them you're looking for parts for a late model 380 with the target sight. If the screw is a standard thread one could fairly easily make one by turning the shape on a lathe with a file and threading the shank with a die, as threading that small a screw on a lathe is a bear! The sight looks like a micro to me.. The spring should be make able as only the major dimensions are critical. It is a tension spring for the cocking lever and shouldn't be critical..
