What scope bases and rings do you recommend?
« on: August 05, 2007, 05:11:36 PM »

I have a new Remington 700 and now I am looking for advice on scope bases and rings.

Do you like one piece or two piece bases?

What brand do you like?

What rings do you recommend?

Thanks,

North Nick

Out of choice I will use two piece mounts made by Apel. I have both their EAWSwing and their roll off mounts. Both types I have found will return to zero when removed and replaced. Although I don't have a Rem 700 the BSA CF2's I have use the same type mounts.

The ugly but well proven Weaver bases and rings have been my standard go-to's on my hunting rifles.  I prefer two piece bases on hunting rifles for the bit easier loading they give you.
When I travel to hunt, I take a back up scope, in Weaver rings, sighted in for my rifle.  If anything were to happen to the main scope -- it never has-- it would be the work of a moment to change out the scope and continue hunting without needing a sight-in.

The common two piece Leupold bases and steel rings work well enough for anyone I know. I use them and like them. Durable for a lifetime of use.

I like "weaver style" steel bases.  I used both Warne and Weaver Grand Slams and both work perfectly.  I'd recommend the Weaver Grand Slams only because they tend to be a few dollars cheaper than the Warne bases.  Other than that they look and feel mostly identical.

As to rings, I've used all types.  I've still not found a good ring for a good price that I really, really like, but for the "I can live with them" type I'd go for Burris rings.  They are a hassle to get on the mounts (you slip them on from behind and then slide them across the base, then you put in the cross-slot screw once it's in position), but once on they're solid, and the scope can be removed indepently of the rings.  You can also get them with some rubber padding on the inside to avoid scratching the scope tube.

Warne rings are vertically split, which means if the scope must come off the rings must too.  Millet rings sometimes have trouble on weaver style bases.  Leupold's in the same price range are aluminum rather than steel (IIRC they have steel ones available, but at a much higher price than the other brands). I've used the Leupold aluminum ones and I prefer their mounting method both ring to base and scope to ring better than the others, but I just don't like to use aluminum rings in most cases (only reason I bought these were because I wanted to scope this rifle quickly, and the local wal-mart had no steel rings, so Leupold was the best aluminum rings they carried).

I've also just recently done a setup with a 1 piece Millet "standard"/Redfield type base and Millet rings.  Stands up decent enough, though I still prefer weaver mounts.  Looking at the mount method Weaver just seems more solid (a few articles I've read have pointed to the same fact - Redfield type is adquately strong, but not as solid as Weaver style).

Leupold DUAL DOVETAIL (DD) bases and rings.  Warne Maxima bases and rings.  or Talley bases and rings.

Go with 2 piece design.  In the 2 piece design, each piece has 2 screws, which means that you have 4 screws total.  With a one 1 piece design, it only has 3 screws.

Make sure that you also use blue loctite.

Not True, Many of Todays One piece picatinny type mounts use all 4 screws.. The EGW's like I posted, the Badgers, and I believe the Warnes also use 4. ~Ace~

If you aren't going to remove the scope to use iron sights, I like the Talley one piece lightweight rings. The base is part of the lower ring half. Go to Talley's site and check them out.  I have Leupold dual dovetail rings on my M70 and I like the Talley rings more. Dave

Well whilst I will have to agree that the Apel rings are not cheap, they do fit the actions very well which is more than I can say for other makes. On a P-H 1200 Super that I picked up NIB, I tried a set of the then new Leupold lever operated QR rings and bases. however the rear base especially was an awful fit on the action and had to be fitted by carefully filing and then rubbing the underside of the base to fit the action bridge contour. After the Gunsmith finished with it they fit perfectly.

The Apel Roll Offs I brought to replace some alloy mounts on a P-H 1100 Deluxe fitted perfectly straight out of the box just as they should. I have a small drawer full of spare P-H rings and cheap rings that unless I cannot find other better mounts will probably never be used. I would rather pay for a decent set that fit and function properly and do the job once than worry about the scope mounted system.

Another make I liked but unfortunately is no longer available was the Australian Hilver mounts.

I like the Leupold Dual Dovetails........as well as the Leupold standard.

I have replaced all the old Redfield and Weaver mounts with the Leupold 2 piece bases and Leupold rings, they do the job for me and they look nice.  Oh, almost forgot, have a couple of the Burris Signature Z rings on Weaver bases.  Like those also.

I too use the two piece Leupold bases and rings along with the Leupold scopes. Lifetime warranty on the scopes and so equiped 700 rifle has never had to be re-zeroed.

Leupold single piece base w/ windage adjustment and rings.   Better yet, a Ruger with integral base and rings.  Haven't found anything else as stable.

Now those I really do like.  I don't own a Ruger with them (I do own a P-95 and a 10/22, but no Ruger centerfire rifles), but my father has a Mod 77 Mk 11 in .270 that has the integral bases, and they are a VERY nice mounting system.  Unless it's still patented I don't see why more manufacturers don't adopt this method.
