760 accuracy

Hi all, I have an older 760 chambered in .270 winchester and wondered what kind of accuracy I might get out of it.  It has not seen much seen much use and the bore appears to be in very good condition.

 Does the forend action bar assembly hang from the barrel or have it's own stub supporting it from the reciever leaving the barrel free floated?

 I don't have any experience with the old style 760, but the later style Remington pumps are just as accurate and in some cases more accurate than your average run of the mill bolt action hunting rifle.

According to the Serial # on my early M760 it must have been manufactured around 1954, I did not get it new until 1957.  It has been accurate with H4831 & IMR4350 pushing 130 grain C-L, and 130 grain Hornaday bullets.  It has also been good with 150 grain bullets.  For some reason my rifle did not like 150 grain power points but my brother's early 760 liked them.  Extraction is not as strong as my bolt action 270s, so I have to drop of a grain of powder with some bullets.  Extraction is good with Hornaday, but I need to drop that grain with Nosler, and Sierra bullets.

Admittedly the accuracy has dropped off with the installation of a new Burris scope.  The next time I get out to the range I am going to pull the scope off and check the screws in the base mount.

p.s.  it is clear off copper.

I hunt with a 1953  760 in 300 Savage  it has open sights but it will keep them in a 21/2" circle at 100yds from a rest. I had one in 30-06  with a 3x weaver about a 1956 model that will hit a pop can everytime at 200yds  they will shoot better then we can .

I have 2 older 760's, both shot very good on/off the bench.

i have a 760 in .30-06 that my great grandfather bought new in 1954. it is topped off with a weaver k4 scope with post reticle.  it shoots factory rem 180 gr core lokt rnsp's  into an inch at 100 consistently. it wont feed spitzers well though. havent tried any handloads in it yet.

My family lives in Pennsylvania and hunts exclusively with Remington 760's.

I personally have owned more than 12 of them and I have hunted and took game with all of them.

I sold my father one - a BDL Deluxe with a Simmons 4 x 12 x 40 scope with Redfield mounts that I sighted in for 200 yards with 140 gr Hornady handloads.

Let me put it to you this way.  I shot that rifle many times and when I got to the point where I could put two bullets in the same hole - I then gave it away before I got the temptation to sell it.

My fathers favorite gun is a 1954 Model 760 with a Clearfield 3 x 9 x 40 scope.  Only he fell out of a tree and did some damage to it.  Instead of just hunting with the newer rifle.  He persisted in trying to fix the old one.  We finally replaced the tube that the forearm travels on and the scope mounts and got it back on paper.  But my dad's eyes and my eyes are not the same and I cannot shoot his rifle.

But just to prove my point, while I was down at the range.  I had my dad put up a new target and took two shots out of a clean, cold barrel at 200 yards.
The bullet holes were inside each other and made a perfect figure 8!  .425 from edge to edge.

I wonder how many bolt action rifles can do that, especially after sitting in a gun cabinet for 4 years!

I have a 760 rifle that I've had for 18 yrs. Mine is 30/06 caliber. Mine will shoot Remington 150 grain Core-lokts and Winchester 150 grain Power Points almost identically. And 3 shot groups, the bullet holes touch each other. If it misses, it is my fault. I've taken deer with it as far as 235 yds. and as close as 3yds. BTW, it is the only deer rifle I own.

I have a 760 in 270 Win. I bought this rifle in 1966 and is a very accurate rifle. If I had to get rid of all but one rifle that I own it would remain mine. It doesn't look real nice anymore but it will still shoot with the best of them.

I agree with others,they shoot good.
I have a real old 270win well not sure 50's early 60's never checked to see how old it is.
and a newer 35 whelen they both shoot easy 1'-2" at at 100 yds.
