Reblueing Winchester 94
« on: July 30, 2007, 04:09:48 PM »
My gunsmith have tried to reblue my 94.  He thought he succeed but when he take a cloth with some oil on the frame - it become "silver" again.  Everything else is blue.  He has tried everything his knowledge content about reblueing - and tell me that I have to live with a "hybrid".  He says there are to much nickle on the frame - and that`s why he don`t get it blue.

Someone out there who can tell him how to do it?

Ummmm, Sverre - what vintage is that 94????  I ask because I have an oldie myself that specifies on the barrel that it is nickle steel.  I'm not sure if nickle will or will not take a blue, maybe someone else can answer that for us but it may be possible to bead-blast the nickle and have it take a blue.

Now for the good questions - (1) are ya sure it's nickle??  (2) if the rifle is vintage mid-late 60s or early 70s, it may not be nickle but the frame may be what Winchester used for steel during that period and I understand the steel was 're-constituted' - that is, it had been used before, re-smelted and re-cast and then machined into the receiver/frame.  Some of those rifles would turn to a purple-ish color when the bluing began to fade.  Nothing wrong with the strength of the steel, just the coloring.  I could be wrong and again, maybe someone else can shed more light on this problem for you.  HTH.  Mikey.

Send it to ultra coatings and have it ceramic coated any color you want.  Fellow by the name of Doug Burch, does excellent work.  He did my custom Remmy 700.
