Barrel wear-460xvr
« on: July 27, 2007, 02:56:44 PM »
My Question Is- I shoot 50 to 100rds a weekend. At 46gr H-110 -240xtpbullets LRM primers will this put to much undo stress on my barrel in time?  Shot two Hogs with one shot at 75yds. What A Gun! Both hogs dead as a door nail!

Any time you have a high round count, there is a chance of barrel wear. But I have over 3000 rounds in my PC 7.5 inch 460 Mag with no apparent wear.

If you ever DO wear out a barrel just send the gun to the manufacturer and get a new barrel, even if you have to pay for it!

Why not shoot .45Colts or .454 Casull ? I see you reload so that leaves even more options.Less powder for plinking = less wear. ;)

I don't own a 460VR. But from what I've read, they are one heck of a gun. A revolver that shoot's a 45 caliber bullet on a flat plane out to 250 yards......my kind of gun!!!

I say if you want to plink, take out your 44 mag. If you want to plink big, shoot your 460 loads! And I agree, if your barrel wears out...get a new barrel. After all, you didn't buy it to hang it on a wall.

What Davemuzz said X3

Ability to shoot different cartridges was one of the reasons I & big Bro bought ours. However ~ when firing 45LC/454 Casull in it, greatly diminished muzzle bark and recoil concerned me tho I paid particular attn to crimp the bullet as heavy as possible. Squib loads can ruin ones day/even life if undetected. Ever notice that S&W didn't recommend shooting the 45Auto Rimmed in it? So, from now on ~ ~ I'll shoot only 460 in the 460. Just my thots ~

Hello Dusty
Neat plan, But I had one of their model 624's they recalled for a soft cylinder. I was Lucky as mine Passed their factory test, But I had some buddies that have this revolver and are still searching for a cylinder to replace theirs with, that didn't Pass. After awhile S&W quits making parts for a revolver once the model has been dropped from their line up. If that happens you are stuck to search for a used part and hope it was one that passed their test. I even had a buddy that located a used one and  sent his whole revolver and the used cylinder into S&W to have them check the cylinder and install it. They returned it and said they would not test or install any Non Factory issued parts. He placed the cylinder him self and swapped it off shortly after.. Hammerdown

first ill have to admit im no expert on the 460 but the load your shooting is a good recipe for forcing cone errosion. Light jacketed bullets and lots of ball powder (and your using lots!!) are about a gurantee of forcing cone wear down the line. First thing id recomend is you step up to 300 grain bullets. The 460 has enough case capasity to push them plenty fast enough to shoot them flat. Second, if it were me id experiment with slower burning powders in a case that big. Ive had some luck with 4198 in the 500 linebaugh and i know john recomends it for the 500 max. So id look at powders in burning rates between aa5744 and imr or h4198. Check with redhawk on this forum hes about the most knowlegable handloader i  know when it comes to the big smiths. Im sure hes fooled with slower powders in his.

I am a big fan of H110 with a 300 gr. cast bullet in my 460 Mag.  I am not a big fan of slower burning powder in a 460 or 500 Mag. But I also don't lke them little 200 gr. bullets. Give me a 240 to 300 gr. hard cast bullet any day over them jackted bullets. JMHO.

whats your resoning for not liking slower powders pal. I know of a few guys that shoot linebaugh maxs that swear by them and that smith cases is very simular.

Lloyd Smale, it not that I don't like them, I just like pushing my bullets a little faster. But I am sure IMR4198 or some of the other slower burning powders can do a good job.

In my 500 I've always pushed it to the MAX. I've never had any problems.

I like many other 500 , 460 owners like heavy hot loads .
I have put over 8000 rounds of hard cast bullets through my 500 and over half of them being 700 grain full house loads of H110 , LIL Gun and 296.
My barrel is as clean as it was the day I bought it with no visiable wear at all although I have not shot one jacketed round through my 500 it's not that I do not like jacketed why buy something I can make myself and have great accuracy to boot !!!!

Ok I,ll give the cast bullets a try sounds like Redhawk1 has,nt had any barrel  wear problems using them. I ordered some cast performance 360gr flatnose gas check, what would be  a good powder for this type bullet? -maybe tite group?

roger460xvr, my advice is stay away from tightgroup, way to easy to double load and we all know what happens then. I use H110 for 90% of my 460 and 500 Mag loads.
