What is the velocity and effective range for this cartridge if someone wanted to use it for whitetail deer?

From my cz527 I get 2200 FPS with the wolf 154grn soft point ammo and right at 2500 fps with 125grn loadings.

With the 154grn load sighted in 2.7" high at 100 you'll be dead on at 200 and only 6" low at 250 yds. At 300yds this load has just under 1000 FTlbs of energy.

I would not hesitate to use this ammo on whitetail deer out to 200yds and if a good 250yd shot presented itself with little wind and a good rest I wouldn't feel the leas bit hesitant to take the shot.

A lot of xenophobes will tell you otherwise but 7.62x39 will do everything a 30-30 will do plus a little more.

amen  my 527 is shooting real close to the above  and it loves 150 grain bthp(.308) with re.#7

I think a lot of the bad reputation that 7.62x39 gets is due to the SKS's that they're often being launched from, rather than the round itself.  Don't get me wrong an SKS is a fine plinking gun (though a bit loud and unwieldy for the task :)), but for hunting it just lacks accuracy (an understatment) and is not very handy in the field.  Awesome "toy" to have at the range though for the prices they sell for (I paid $99 for mine in unissued condition).

If more people got better guns for it (either the Handi-Rifle or one of the bolt actions like the CZ) then I think it'd have a better following.

I think .308 winchester is  .308x52   and 762x39=.311x39
my cz 527 mikes .31089  and likes .308  155 bthp  with re.#7=under an inch at a hundred  but it shoots anything under  2 inches at a hundred
