Rossi Model 92 Clones
« on: July 15, 2007, 06:13:43 AM »
Are these any good?  Have a chance to pick one up, really don't need another lever 44 mag., but what the heck might be ok.  What if any does any one have any experience with them, good, bad or indifferent?  Thanks in advance.

I've owned two of them, both of them in .45 Colt. My first one was the Stainless Steel Rifle with 241/4 octagon barrel, This one was marked Navy Arms and was the pre safety model. My current one is the 241/4 octagon barreled model with color case hardened reciever and is marked Legacy Sports International. This one has the safety mounted on the bolt. Both rifles have been reasonably accurate and have digested everything from my Blackpowder Cowboy Loads up to some Smokin hot hunting handloads with 300 gr hardcast bullets. All in all I've been happy with the Rossi made 92 rifles. The older Navy Arms rifles action was a bit rough compared to my LSI rifle. I'd recommend the Rossi 92's to someone looking to get into Cowboy Action Shooting or someone looking for a good pistol caliber rifle for brush country hunting.

I have the Rossi 92 clone from LSI in  38 Special /.357Magnum caliber.   The new action was a little stiff, but a good cleaning took care of that.   After I shot it, I really fell in love with it.  These are very nice rifles. :)

Hi,

I have the 24" case/blue 357mag.  I have put on a marbles tang sight and I am very happy with my accuracy and performance.  The only issue that I have is that when I cycle the action quickly the mag cases will hang up when going into the chamber. It doesn't seem to want to pivot when the action is closing.  I have been tempted to polish the face of the bolt and the chamber but haven't done anything yet.  It doesn't  affect 38sp cases just 357 cases.

I've had two of them.  The first was/is a .357 'Puma' that I bought about 17 years ago, the second was a .44 magnum that I bought from a friend of mine.  The friend I bought it from regretted selling it to me, so after about a year and a half, I sold it back to him for what I paid for it.  I've regretted selling it ever since and would like to find another like it.

The .357 is a definite keeper.  I've added the semi-buckhorn sights and a brass bead on the front sight.  Just this weekend I dropped a nice little doe with it while deer hunting.

Hey Kmrere42:
I'd like to put a tang sight on mine too.   In certain conditions I have a hard time aiming with these iron sights.    Did you change your front sight also?

I've got a trapper in 357 and I love it. I put a Marble's tang sight on it (better for 50+ year old eyes) and am very happy with it's accuracy. I did not change the front sight. Mine is an older rifle found in new/old stock condition and it has the front sight as part of the front barrel band. So far no problems with that front sight. I haven't tried it with 38 spec rounds yet so I don't know about any possible feeding issues. Just got a 180gr mould and am looking forward to trying these heavy cast bullets in it. So far only used my cast 158gr gas check bullets and they shoot well. All in all, the little Rossi is a great rifle and one I would not consider selling.

I bought a 92 made by rossi, looked to be new but he insisited it was older and just never used.  Its a 92 trapper 16" barrel as you describe.  He said it was older due to the lack of a saftey and not being sold as a puma.  Don't really know the difference between a puma and a rossi.  I bought it because it would fun to shoot with 38 specials, and sized right for my 7 year old to shoot.  It covers the bases on both counts.  4.0 unique and 158 swc just right for a beginner and fun for the old man to boot.

I have a Rossi/Puma/Legacy Sports (whatever you want to call it) 20" 44mag.  It has functioned great and is one fun gun to hunt with.  Not exactly a target rifle, but it'll handle a deer sized target.

Bob,
What kind of bullet mould did you go with for the 180 grain bullet.  There have been some group buys on a GC 180 grain bullet that I would love to get ahold of and try.  I've had good luck this season with a Speer 170 grain gold dot soft point out of mine and would like to get a cast bullet in the same weight range to play with.

Here's a link to the thread on the mould.

It's here and looks nice, but I haven't had been able to do any casting for a while so I can't speak to how good a bullet it throws. I'm hoping it will be for the 357 what the Lee 310gr gas check is to the 44 mag. Hopefully after the first of the year I'll be able to get some casting done.
If you keep your eyes open on castboolits you'll find some interesting custom mould group buys. Takes a while to get them, but it's fun to play with.

Popplecop, I have been shooting the EMF Hartford/Rossi in 45 Colt, 24" oct barrel so far I like this a lot.  Cosmetically a little different than the Legacy models I think.  Not sure but EMF might have some different specs from Rossi, like sights and wood....but it's still a Rossi and so far I'm happy with it, especially after it got broken in a little bit.
I took off the safety on the bolt and plugged it, and put in a steel magazine follower, other than that I have not done anything but shoot it.   I do not see the 44mag listed on EMF's site, just 357 and 45....it must be EMF doesn't import the 44mag. ?

Bob,

Yep, that's the bullet I'm looking for but unfortunatly I missed out on the last group buy, so it looks like unless I find someone who will loan/rent/sell/give me a mould, I'm out of luck for a while.

If'n you find out it's not your cup of tea, keep me in mind.
