458 lott and460 weatherby

I don't know about the Weatherby but I own the 458 Lott and it has 73 ft lbs of recoil shooting a 500 gr bullet at 2358 ft per second.

73 ft lbs is for sissys.  The big Weatherby kicks out about 93 ft lbs, or 27% more....

You're right Lone Star 73 ft lbs doesn't hurt at all but I'm sure the other # of ft lbs would hurt.

The 460WBY  isn't all that bad to shoot. I've had some board members shoot my 460 and said the same thing that it wasn't what they thought it would be on recoil.

If anyone lives close to Wichita Kansas drop me a PM and will go shot it. We will start mild (300gr. HP) and work our way up to wild (500gr. RN).

Some day soon I'll get a few boxes of the Barnes 600gr. "O" Bullets and start have some real fun

I have a CZ550 Safari in 458 Lott and my buddy has a 460 Wby. The Lott is at my top comfort level for recoil. I have shot both extensively. Neither are what I would consider "fun" to shoot especially sighting them in from the bench. In my opinion, the 460 is just plain abusive.

I have the 460 and from the bench after 3 shots I need to add padding to my shoulder to shoot more.
When standing it's not so bad because your body can move back, and it will move BACK.
I shot a Bison and an Elk with it and the 460 did a great job.

I've yet meet the man whom has felt the recoil of any caliber when shooting at game.
 BTW I was recently in Tanzania hunting buffalo and the PH had a 460 WBY. He said factory WBY ammo is $58USD per ROUND if bought in Tanzania at that rate you don't do much bench shooting. He wanted and I took him a laser bore sighter so he could save some ammo sighting in a scope on his WBY. The SiteLite cost less than 2 rounds of ammo there (I paid $99 from Cabelas)

I had the pleasure (adrenaline rush) of shooting my buddy's 458 Lott Ruger this weekend. In the past, I've been lucky to shoot several big bores including some 375s, 458 Wins, 460 Wthby, 405 Win, and 378 Wthby. I guess I should say that these are not bench guns and probabably should not be shot from a sitting bench. That said, one day in 1990 I shot a 1 1/2" group at 200 yards, 3 shots with the 378, and it was an exercise in willpower. The 378 was the worst in recoil in all those rounds by a fair margin, I believe because of the velocity.
If you shoot these guns from a standing position, offhand or with a standing rest, they are ok. The Ruger 458 Lott kicks, make no mistake, but from  offhand, it was fun. We blasted some big holes in an oak stump, and we had alot of fun doing it.

I've owned a couple of Lott's and have fired a 460.  The Lott is a straight walled case and can chamber and shoot a 458 Win Mag in a pinch just dandy.  The Weatherby in IMHO is more punishing and doesn't do anything that the Lott won't.  You should get the Lott hands down.
