What do you use in the Field?

When in the field what do you use?  12, 16, 20, 28, 410?  Autoloader, Pump, SxS, O/U, Single Shot?  Fixed, or Screw In chokes?

Except for the 16 gauge part of the question my answer would have to be yes I've used them all at one time or another. For the most part I guess I've used pumps followed by semiautos the most often for shotgun hunting and no doubt the 12 gauge more so than the others. I guess in order of use it would then go right down the list from 12 to 20 to 28 and then the least used for hunting being the .410.

Long ago I had a Savage Model 24 chambered to 20 gauge and .22 Magnum that I used extensively for turkey, squirrel, rabbit and even dove hunting. Had we had enough deer to hunt in those days I'm sure with slugs it would even have done well on that. My how I miss that gun and regret letting it go which I did after Bama declared rifles off limits for turkey hunting. Most of my use of the 20 gauge for hunting was with that one gun.

I've used pumps, semiautos and doubles both SxS and O/U in 28 gauge for bird hunting and done a wee bit of shooting with pump and SxS in .410 on birds mostly just black birds around the house as I've never taken it afield as a hunting tool on a real hunt only around the house use.

These days I no longer own a semiauto but do still have pump, SxS and O/Us but use the O/Us primarily now. In fact today at the skeet range I shot both 12 and 28 gauge O/Us and did about as well with one as the other. I shot three rounds the first two with the 12 and last with 28 and the scores were 22-25-22. Had I shot another might it too have been a straight with the 28? Dunno I've shot lots with it so maybe but then I was tiring and when I get tired scores go down regardless of what I'm shooting. These days I seldom have more than three rounds in me.

12 gauge for me...Usually my Browning B-80, this gun fits me to a T...It is now my main go to gun, and with screw in chokes and both a 2 3/4 barrel for light loads and a heavy 2 3/4 or 3 inch barrel, I have used for quail, doves, ducks and even turkeys...

Browning BPS 12 with InvectorPlus chokes... soon to be augmented by a Browning Citori 525 Field 12 ga. with the same choke system.

Wet weather/late season = Browning BPS 12 ga 3" chamber 26" barrel with the invector tubes
Dry weather/upland = Winchester Model 12 12ga with 2 3/4" chamber 28" barrel

Benelli SBE, shoots everything from 2-3/4 dove loads to 3-1/2" Goose loads.  Light, easy to clean, changeable chokes.  Kicks, but with a Limbsaver recoil pad an a mercury recoil suppressor in the stock, tames the kick.  New SBE II has the comfortec stock.  You can pick up a good used one for $600 at a gun show.  I have had Browning Auto 5's, Remington 11-87's, and Beretta's, along with pumps.  Like the fast handling and action of the auto.  Benelli's are superfast reloading, so getting the second shot off is quick.

for duck and geese super x 2 ,or SKB water fouler ! both 12 ga.
doves/quail the SKB or browning citori 20 ga. !
for deer a savage bolt action slug gun ! or a super X 2 turkey gun with an improved  mod. choke for shooting buckshot !

turkey either the super X 2 or the SKB ! I also have this old 870 pump that i have hunted everything with and bring it out still sometimes ! If i could only have one - the 870 !

For the better part of 34 years I used a  Monkey Ward 12 Ga (Mossberg 500) Pump for $165 gun it worked well for everything dove to trap /skeet.I finally wore it out ! Now I have two A5 Brownings! A 12 ga Mag and a Sweet sixteen! I don't think I'll ever ware these out so I'm good to go for the rest of my shooting life! :)

I use a 20 gauge. I'm very fond of 20 gauge guns because I like the way they fit in my hands. I don't think I've ever handled one that I didn't like. Most of my shots are within 30 yards, so it's OK. If I shot out to 40 yards much I'd use a 12.  I consider the 20 gauge a great 30 yard gun, based on pattern performance.

Mostly - Winchester 101 12 gauge  O/U with Briley tubes.  Started to reunite with the Browning 12 gauge A5 - enjoying it too.

Franchi Autoloader 12 ga, one of the old recoil operated ones with a polychoke & 24" bbl.
Berretta 20 ga O/U SS5B, long since discontinued.
Both are very nice to carry.

For most stuff my 870 pump.  For those thick winged sea-ducks, I gotta switch to my mosberg 935 super-mag autoloader, make sure to knock them down before they can dive.

For some reason the one i seem to grab first is always my old Winchester 1400 / 12 Ga. with the full choke , I just love that old auto-loader . also have a Traditions 12 Ga. O/U for the fun of it and because i got it FREE . had it for 3 years now and it is still stiff to open , shows how much i use it  ;) but the 1400 is as smooth as waxed glass .  ;D

Remington 870 20gauge, Modified choke, 26" barrel.  Have others( Browning BPS 12/Stoeger Uplander Supreme 12) but theyre not used as much. I can do just as much with that 870 as I can with them two 12 ga.  Lots of use over 8 years make it Uber-smooth

REMINGTON 870 for deer and turkeys (12 ga.), RUGER red label (20 ga.) for everthing else.

In this order:

1.  Mossberg Maverick 12 ga.  -  Was a B-day gift from the Mrs. four years ago and quickly became my favorite field gun.
2.  NEF 16 ga. - It's close to the perfect squirrel gun. Incidentally, another gift from the Mrs.

It depends on the situation of course.  Although I did buy a 12 ga  11-87 special purpose just a month ago.

I have a o/u double barrel Brno (12 as well)

A Remington 812 single shot (with a 30 inch barrel)

But I favor the 11-87 on fowl, the 812 on fox and the Brno is in for an overhaul.

My first go-to gun was a Savage 311 in 12 gauge until it was stolen -  :'( Then I bought a single shot 12 ga topper and a 20 gauge Stevens Pump.  The 12 gauge saw more action than the 20.  They were replaced with a Baikal 12 gauge O/U with fix chokes and 2 3/4 chambers (a special dealers gun I got at a steal) and is now my preferred bird gun.  I had a stoeger s/s in 20 gauge but traded that for a Mossberg 500 in 12 with two barrels (one slug and one with chokes).  I do used a .22M over 20 gauge (Baikal) for squirrel hunting as well as a single shot 20 gauge NEF with slug sights.  I have a Savage four-tenner that I can pop into either one for small game.  Generally, it is my 12 gauge Baikal for two thirds of my hunting.   :-\

I know I will be in the minority here upland bird hunting. I use a weatherby Athena in 28 Ga. It's light quick to point and excellent for grouse and quail . I also have an American arms  12.  3 1/2" double o/u. for geese, ducks and turkey.

Pheasant: Citori Grade III 12ga.
Duck: Browning Pigeon Grade BPS 12 ga.
They all work well being that I"m a lefty.

 :D I have 3 and they are all pump guns. 12 ga Browning BPS 28"-3"-Inv+ number 2 Benelli Super Nova pump Camo (26"-3 1/2-MC) and finally a Browning BPS 20ga with 26 inch tudes. My next toy will be a the Browning in 28ga. I don't really need it but...................  Jess
