Tikka 7mm-08 or 308 for Hogs & Deer?
« on: July 10, 2007, 12:03:48 PM »
I have pretty much made up my mind to get a Tikka T3 Lite.  I can't decide if I want it in the 7mm-08 or the 308.  There are some wild hogs in our hunting club that I wouldn't mind taking a shot at.  I'm leaning more to the 7mm-08 right now.  Since I'm not into hand loading what would be a good cartridge for taking hogs?  Is the 308 a "better" choice for an all round type gun?

I have read much debate between the 2 calibers and I'm struggling to make the best choice.  I have also considered the 270WSM, but I'm not sure I want to go that route.

Thanks in advance!

IMHO...Hogs are tough critters. I went hog hunting once and shot 3 of them with a 300 Win Mag...one of them I knocked rolling. Didn't find ANY of them...Found out later that a Hog's vitals are further forward than most critters,,mostly between their front shoulders. Anyway, I would go for the 308 because it is more versatile than the 7-08 as far as hunting big game goes. and you can get surplus military ammo cheaper if you want to stock up. You may never hunt Elk sized game, but if you did, you'd be a LOT more comfortable with a 308. I. myself just ordered a 30-06 for that very reason.

+1 for .308

They're virtually the same given that the 7mm-08 is on the same case.  Honestly, the 708 would probably be just fine, But I like the 180 Grain bullets for Hogs.  Every little bit of umph helps.

Keep in mind, that extra umph makes no difference if you cant put it where it counts.  Either way, PRACTICE.
