Help me chose a stock
« on: July 03, 2007, 11:56:20 AM »
I'm ready to order a stock for my project rifle from Richards Micro-fit stocks. This will be for a Daly LH Mauser action with a 22 in. Douglas #4 barrel chambered for the 9.3x62. The stock I have chosen is their Old Classic #102 style. Need help in deciding which to go with, a brown laminate or a Grade AA Fancy walnut. Walnut is available in Ca. Claro, American Black, English and Bastogne walnut. Which wood is best? Order time is 8 to 12 weeks so looks like I need to make some decisions. Please, need your help and knowledge on this one.

Also, who can I send this to for a checkering job?

I can't help out with a checkering lead, but IMHO Claro will give you the most "bang for your buck", in terms of fancy grain & color contrast.

I bought my classic for $125, off a picture list of stocks (The Bargain Stock Gallery) that had been ordered & shaped but never shipped/sold - so it was shipped immediately.

I have had stocks in American Black Walnut and English Walnut and thought them all beautiful but I am tempted to go with Rangr44's suggestion for California Claro for its fancy grain and color contrast.  Can you show us pictures of what you get when you get it???  Mikey.

English walnut should be the lightest weight and the most expensive in fancier grades.  Claro and black walnut should be approximately the same weight and the fancier grades of Claro will be more expensive than Black walnut.  Bastogne is the heaviest of the walnut varieties and can be as expensive as English walnut in the fancier grades; Bastogne and a typical laminate stock should weight about the same.

Any of the pure walnut stocks will checker better than the laminate stocks (except for Serengeti or Accurate Innovations style of laminate gun stocks) and some custom stock checkers will not hand checker (or will severely limit the checkering styles) for laminate stocks.  Here are a few links to custom stock checkers that I've found:

I’ll be sending a Claro walnut stock to Sherry Abraham in North-Central Oregon (greater Portland area) later this fall for a Fleur de'lis with ribbons style checkering job.  Hope this helps  :)  Jim
