Went to a gun store tonight looking for some liquid blueing to fix the damage to my Encore from the scopemount (locktite). They told me what I already knew, that the stuff they sell does not work to good. Said they had some stuff from Brownells that worked well, to bring it in and they would dab some on it. They did and I must say it is the best cold blue I have ever seen used. You can tell it was repaired, but not without looking closely. Did not get the name of the stuff, might have to go back and do that since I would not mind having some of that stuff around. Hope it holds up over time.

Do you remember if it was a gel or a liquid ?

It was a liquid, had a kind of green tint to it.

I didn't know what bullseye is refering to,untill he mentioned brownells. The stuff I've used from them is a liquid called oxpho-blu. Works really well. Dab it on with a terry cloth and buff with 3or 4, 0 steel wool. repeat 3 or 4 times. Results a very dense blue-black finish, durable. Hope this helps. I think oxpho-blu is most gunsmiths, best kept secret!

Went back tonight and had a Marlin 39A touched up from base damage. It looked good also. They were using Brownells Dicropan T-4 Touch Up Liquid Gun Blue. Brownells #082-056-008, $11.50 for a 8 oz bottle with no hazmat charge. A 4 oz bottle is $9.64. This placed used the liquid, but is also available in a creme.

I also saw the Oxpho-Blue creme the other poster mentioned in the Brownells catalog. They say it is a little bit tougher blue than the T-4, but sounds like it is harder to use. It is about the same price.

They are on page 175 of the current Brownells catalog and are right next to each other on the page. Check it out. I am going to order some in the future to have around for touch ups.

A friend of mine who is a gunsmith orders from Brownells I will have him pick me some up on his next order. Thanks guys
