Sportster front sight height
« on: June 28, 2007, 03:15:53 PM »
Hello,
I recently purchased a Sportster 22 lr with open sights. It is shooting significantly low, beyond the range of the rear sight to compensate. If someone could measure the front sight height of a correctly sighted sportster if would be greatly appreciated.  The front sight on this one is approximately 1/2 inch.
Thanks

Welcome to GBO!! You can call H&R, give them the height of the sight you have, and they might send you a lower sight, they'll need to know if it's a dovetail sight or is mounted with a screw, their toll free number is (866)776-9292. They've got a bad habit of occasionally installing the wrong front sight on some rifles. :-\

Or, if it's a blade without a bead on top, you can file it down to raise point of impact.

Thanks, I called and they said they would send out a replacement front sight. The one on this rifle looks taller than the ones pictured in the catalog, as far as I can tell. At some point I would like to find a peep sight for this. Do you know anyone who makes one that can be installed with little or no gunsmithing?
Thanks again.

The barrel should be drilled and tapped for a scope rail, if it is, just order a Williams WGRS from H&R, see the Peep and Firesights link in the FAQs.

Machias;
   Better save that front sight ! If you get the WGRS you may need the higher sight..

  BTW: Is your user name from thje name of your hometown ?

  If so..is that in Maine, New York or Washington ?
