Educate me on the Remington Mod.78 chambered in .243 win
« on: June 26, 2007, 06:57:42 AM »
I found a nice clean Rem mod 78 chambered in .243 win at a local gun store. It seems to have not been used much at all. The bore is bright and clean with no visable wear. The blueing is 98% and so is the hardwood stock It has a set of see thru rings and 3X9 simmons installed which I don't care for and will be replaced if I decide to buy it. They are asking $229.00 for it. Anyone own one of these? Any pros or cons? Thanks for your help.

I can't remember for sure, but I think that the Sportsman 78 is very similar to the Rem. M-788.
A very reliable rifle, "plain jane", nothing fancy about it.
If it's in the condition you describe, it should be well worth the asking price.

The Sportsman 78 was a plain Jane version of the Mod 700.  It was offered in the mid 1980's and had a hard wood stock.  There were also similar versions offered in the pump (Sportsman 76) and semi-auto rifle (Sportsman 74) and the 870 pump (Sportsman 12).  The current 870 Express is very similar to the older Sportsman 12.  The 78 was offered in only a few standard calibers such as the .243, .270, .30-06, etc.  It very closely resembled the Mod 788 by appearance, however the Mod 788 was a short action rifle.

$229 is an excellent price for that rifle.  When I see them in my area, the price is usually much more than used 700 ADL and BDL's.

Buy the rifle and a decent set of scope mounts. Remove and throw away the see thru things, install new mounts and put the scope back on. Now go to the range and site it in.  For less than $300 dollars ,you got one heck of a deer, varmit, coyote rifle.

Winchester made their Ranger series(Model 70) at the same time. Hardwood stocks, blind magazines and cheap finishes. They all shot well though.

The Rem 78 came along after the 788 was discontinued, and Rem wanted a cheaper entry level gun. Overall they are are 700s with cheaper finish and hardwood stocks. Good shooters.
