I have bought my first H&R - advice please...
« on: June 25, 2007, 12:58:46 PM »

Hello everybody !!

I live in Sweden were theise rifles are very rare but today I found one that I bought.

Its a "Model 58" in calibre 22 Hornet with snr AU 486XXX.

Its got a straight shotgunstyle stock in walnut and "flamestyle" (dont know the word for in in english) metal, except for a blued barrel - looks really handsome and its in absolute mint condition with only a few brake in shots made.

Now - can somebody tell me what kind of version I have bought?

When I look at the present lineup from H&R I cant see this 58 model, does anybody know how old it is (when it was made) or perhaps also tell me something more about it...?

Thank you.

Welcome aboard , if i read the chart right in the FAQs , its a 1980 made rifle , as for the frame , its called Case Hardened , it gives the flame treated look .

Look at the FAQ post at the top of the H&R centerfire forum and it will give you tons of info about these rifles .

Hi Johnny, I have a 22 Hornet with a casehardened receiver, like yours, I bought it as a 20ga shotgun in the early '80s and had 22 Hornet and 30/30 bbls fitted at the factory.  Serial # starts with AX, which is the year 1983. Later on when the synthetic stocks became available, I added them to it. Great little rifle, I call it my "Rook" rifle, it has taken its share of Coyotes, Crows and Jackrabbits. And lots of Ground Squirrels! I reload for it, and use 40gr Speer spire points with 4227 powder. BTW I collect Swedish Mausers, and have several M94 carbines, M38 Husqvarnas, M96, CG63, and two M41bs. Good luck with your little 22 Hornet Handirifle, they are Fun to shoot, quiet, and pack quite a punch for varmits and small game.   Duane

Thank you Gentlemen.

 :)

I did find the FAQ just after I have put my post online.... :-[

But Im still a little confused about the two (!) lists of manufacture dates...!??

"Case Hardened" - I do recall this word when I heard it now, I guess I have read that someplace before...

I really gives a great look to the metal.

Over in the UK they seem to call all kinds of breakbarrel singleshot rifles for Rook Rifles, here in the northern parts of Europe we often use the German designation - "kipplauf" to describe them.

Today I will put in my gunpermit application and within a few weeks I can return to the store to pick it up.

Together with my 1022 Ruger I have now fulfilled two of my possible four permits for firearms in this country....

Come to American, become a citizen, and you can have as many as you want!!!! Just stay away from California, New York City, Massachusetts and a few other locations that are less than gun owner friendly.  The south-east US is my personal favorite.  Seriously, we can always use more gun owners in this counrty, even if we have to import them.

Welcome to the forum.

JohnnySweden,

Welcome!!    What he said.  But if you can't stay, at least visit.  Glad to have fellow gun owners from anywhere.  I live in southern California, and xhare may not be too far off, at least as far as what we can get.  You can still shoot anything you want here though!

If I had to go down to 4 guns, I'd have a LOT of trouble picking them.  I feel for ya!

It is in fact  a lot of work to be a legal gun owner here.

First of all you must qualify for basic training, we call this the "Hunters Exam", it will set you back $300 but its valid for life.

The course is in total 60 hours education in safe gun handling and knowledge about wildlife, often one lesson each week in three hours every time.

Finishing this there are two written tests and three tests in practical safe gun handling and marksmanship at the range.

With a exam you are allowed to own four firearms of you own choice but all models must be approved by the Government as suitable for hunting, the AR-series are not but the Mini-14 have recently become legal. Basic rule is that everything that looks military is a no-no. Clips are limited to 5 rounds each, handguns are not allowed for hunting.

To own guns require a unique gun permit for each rifle, the first is $85 and the three other are $30/each. If you have four rifles for a couple of years and can prove "a need" you can on a special request be allowed another two guns - but never ever more then six in total.

In order to get the permits approved you must have a gun safe according to the SS3492 standard or better, I bought a inexpensive small one at just $500.

With everything above in order you have to wait 4-8 weeks for the first permit and 2-4 weeks for the following. A permit is valid for life, unless revoked for criminal acts.

Alright - there are not much freedom here, right...?

But...

Crimes with firearms are very rare here and the public in general are not concerned with firearms because accidents involving these are even more rare.
Nobody gets a permit by chance, to put this much effort and money into the hobby guarantee that the gun enthusiast have a genuine interest in guns and are therefor less likely to mess things up using them and thereby causing accidents.

(Gee, I really love this spell check function, everything turns yellow when I write and I fell I haven't improved my written English this much since high school...*LOL*.)

Welcome, Johnny! If you ever visit the USA, you'd be mighty welcome in this part of the country, western Wisconsin. My best shooting buddy is of Swedish descent, named Erickson, and we even have a town here named Stockholm.

You are quite correct: Sweden has little gun crime (though I do remember the murder of your Prime Minister Palme by a gun-wielding assassin). In the USA, however, we fear that those who want to impose restrictions upon our ownership of firearms have the intention to eventually make all firearms ownership illegal. They will do it a little at a time, passing one restriction after another until they have made all firearms illegal.

Your English is excellent!! If only Americans studied languages more -- I had a little Spanish and German in school, but your English is as good as mine! Glad you are with us, and good luck with your Hornet!

Thank you, db22...

My personal view of the laws regarding firearms in Sweden is that I support the idea of a lot of education and the use of gun safe.

What I cant understand is the limit of just 4 or 6 firearms, if somebody actually wants to go rampage with guns then 4 of them would be more then enough...

Language is important since just about 10 million people worldwide speaks Swedish, so English is mandatory from grade three and up...

Wisconsin is around Milwaukee, right....?

I remember a TV sitcom set in Wisconsin (I think) from the 70s, about two girls (Laverne & Shirley?)...

Welcome aboard :) You are correct about Lavern and Shirley. It is Milwaukee (a city) in Wisconsin (a State) ;D They worked in a brewery and it was about their adventures at work and with their friends. It was from the 70's, but I believe the time set was the 50's or early 60's by the clothing style and hair.

That was a pretty cool show, it was always aired straight after Happy Days on Sunday evenings when I was a kid...

Isn't Wisconsin also the home state of Harley Davidson motorcycles too...?

Welcome aboard Johnny I live in Illinois and we boarder next to Wisconsin You have hit the nail on the head with Lavern and Shirley  and Harley Davidson but ya left out the Cheese Head part. We have a mostly friendly rivalry with Wisconsin and I do most of my hunting and fishing in their great state. I agree with the education part and yours sound extensive I wish they would do more of that here . Enjoy your H&R NEF . When you say 4 guns does that include interchangeable barrels or complete guns ? By the way they call us Flatlanders in Illinois. Kurt

Welcome Johnny, from the western side of the USA, in Oregon.

With Sweden's restricted & regulated firearms ownership, I am curious about your ammunition availability.
Are your choices limited as to what & how much ammo you can purchase?
Is handloading your own ammo even an option?

Bill

Johnny -- I'm on the far western side of Wisconsin, on the Mississippi River. Milwaukee is on the eastern side, on the Lake Michigan shore, about 120 km north of Chicago. The land here is hilly and wooded, and the hunting and fishing are very good.

You have a Ruger 10/22! I have two of them. They are a lot of fun, aren't they? I read somewhere that suppressors are mandatory for hunting in some parts of Europe, because of the noise problem. Here, they are completely illegal! Different attitudes, I suppose.

Peanut has given you an idea of the friendly rivalry between Wisconsin and Illinois. I imagine regions of Sweden have the same situation -- making fun of each others' accents and food, etc. Our football teams are the big issue, though -- the Chicago Bears versus the Green Bay Packers. Hoo boy, that's a whole 'nother thread, off topic . . .

 Dear Johnny,

Welcome aboard. I live in the other end of the country from those other guys. I live in Florida. I'm near the talking mouse. DISNEY  WORLD!!! boooo, boooo!

Well they're OK for neighbors I guess but I never go near the place. Florida is the home of small deer, large gators and hogs a plenty.

Johnny,

A hearty welcome from central New York State!  Thanks for the information about Sweden's gun laws, that should give us a heads-up about what the liberal politicians are up to here!  The cost of the course, permits and gun safe would seem to make gun ownership prohibitive for most people.  At least we have not yet gotten to that point yet.  How is gun ownership looked on by the majority of citizens?

What can you hunt? How long are the seasons?

I have a similar H&R Topper in .22 Hornet with the full-length forend and a standard pistol grip buttstock.

Johnny, Welcome aboard! I've been away for a week or so, so sorry about my late response. Here is a thought for you. If you can only own four rifles, are there restrictions on how may barrels you can own? As you know, your .22 Hornet is old enough that H&R will not fit other barrels to it, but barrels do come up for sale on e-bay, and other sites. Since only the receiver is serial numbered,it would seem to me that additional barrels would not be considered "firearms". If more barrels are not restricted, you could put shotgun barrels on it ( .410, 20 ga. and 12 ga are readily available, sometimes 28 ga.). Other rifle barrels would be resticted to low-preasure rounds, 30-30 is common, and .357 mag and .44 mag were made and show up from time to time. With a shotgun barrel and maybe a .30-30 you would have a wide variety. I'm no expert on the early H&R's, but if you do try to get additional barrels, I think there are two "families", neither of which are interchangeable, one for the "snap-on" forearm, the other for the "screw-on" forearm. Others here can give you more info if you need it. By the way, I own an early H&R in .30-30. I replaced the wood stocks with the newer plastic ones, because they are lighter, and the butt has a high comb for scope use. I think of it as an American "stalking rifle". Mark.
