Sportster vs Ultra varmint
« on: June 23, 2007, 05:48:23 PM »
In 22 Mag ONLY, has anyone noticed much difference in accuracy?  I'm not sure I want the extra weight, but the sportster comes with straight comb stock, not the Monte Carlo unit and it would be about $40 with shipping to get it, plus extra for the scope base.

If the Ultra were a lot more accurate, it might just sway me.

All my quotes are in the $190 range for the 22 WMR UV.  Plus DROS fee and tax. >:(

handi, i don't own a sportester in 22 mag but i do got a ultra varmit in 22 mag. accuracy is good. 12 whistle pigs 6 yotes this year. longest pig shot about 110 yds. 1 yote shot at 125yds.scope is 3-9 simmons pro hunter. i have been lucky and darn good shot placement on all the varmits i have looked at. have fun and take care.

I have both the Sportster and Ultra .22 Mag.  I find them to be equally as accurate.  The difference to date, at least for me, seems to be in the type of ammo fired.  Both are zeroed at 100 yards.  I must add that I have only tested four types of ammo, so perhaps I've not found a particular brand that places one above the other.

As you mentioned, the Ultra with the bull barrel and laminated wood is noticeably heavier than the Sportster.  The Sportster has claimed few ground hogs.  I've not had the Ultra out in the field, although that will change soon.   :)

Thanks guys, I don't really want the extra weight if the sportster is as accurate, since most will be 50-75yd single shots anyway.  But I also don't want to end up spending as much for the monte carlo stock+sportster as I would have for the ultra either.

handirifle:  Both typically shoot within 2" at 100 yards.  Winchester Dyna points and CCI's seem to shoot best.  The other ammo I've tried are Winchester Supreme and Super X.  The Supreme ammo shoots about 4-5 inches higher that the others.  Both rifles are zeroed using the Dyna points ... they're the least expensive.

Each hog I've hit with the Sportster was probably within 75 yards.

I use Simmons aluminum .22 rifle mounts and a Bushnell 3X9X40 Sportsman on the Sportster.  Even though it has a low comb stock I don't have to raise my head.  I would try it first with the factory stock, you can always change later if you need to.

I'm in Maryland.  If your nearby I would be glad to meet with you and let you try both of mine to assist with your decision.

Good luck with your decision.  Let us know what you decide.

Very generous offer, and thanks, but since I live in southern California, I think it'd be cheaper to buy the stock.  ;D ;D

I'll have to try it as you say.

handi, i'm shooting 33 gr. remington v-max right now. it holds just under a 1 inch 5 shot group at 100 yds. the only other ammo i have messed with was some 40 gr. cci. it held about 1&1/4 inch at 100 yds. i really like the ultra varmit. i am in poor health and the only shooting or hunting i get to do is when a couple of buddies help me out. i wish i could get out more and be more helpful to you. so far the weight of the ultra varmit has not been a problem for me. most of my shooting has been done from benches and stands set up where i can get to them.so not a whole lot of walking for me. take care and have fun!

Well thanks everyone, got a new 22 mag on the way.  Unfortunately it's NOT and NEF.  The local dealer gave me a price on a new Savage 93GL that I just couldn't pass up.  Everyone else quoted me $249 or very close for this rifle.  That is OVER MSRP.  This time around the dealer quoted me $169.  I had to verify he was looking at the right gun, he was.  So now it's on it's way to the shop and in 10 days it will be mine.  I keep getting so close to a Sportster its not funny.

Last time around, I ended up with a 38-55 Target model.  Kinda glad about that one too. ;D ;D

Congratulations on your decision.  The Savage should serve you well.

Congrats Handi, a man has to buy what he can afford, then he has enough money left to play with it!!! ;D

To be totally honest, I was after the Savage the first time, too, but after the dealer quoted me $169 for the Savage, I can't pass it up.

Ha Ha Ha,
I did a similar thing, I now have a second hand Ruger 96 in 22mag with a 17hmr barrel on the way. Its funny how we get side tracked.
