New .270 rifle
« on: June 21, 2007, 09:03:06 AM »
I am looking at getting a nice .270 for my son (and me).  I am willing to spend up to $2,000 for a rifle and scope.  I have a Browning A Bolt in .243 that has been great for me.  Any thoughts / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This is how I see it....

Check out a Kimber or Montana rifle.  Can't go wrong with either one.

Tikka and Sako always get good reports too, and are cheaper.

After that you'll hear from CZ and Remington fans.

Lower dollar favorites which are reportedly good out of the box are Howa 1500, Weatherby Vanguard, and Savage.

I have a Remington 700 xcr in .270. I love this rifle, it is even better handeling and shooting than my Browning A-Bolt.
Guns and Ammo just did an article on the xcr.  Also, my trigger was 4.25 lbs from the factory and came with the new trigger.

If you want to spend $2000 and have an awesome rifle you can.  My criteria of buying a rifle is simple #1.) what rifles shoot the most accurately? #2.) can I afford the rifles that meet #1.  I've bought my father in law a savage weather warrior 30-06 and put a leupold on it, and I also bought my cousin a savage package 30-06 that looks just like it.  Both of those rifles are amazing.  The guns feel solid and shoot incredibly.  I happen to like stainless and sythetic combo's and it's just a personal preference.  I love savages, but I hunt with a TC Encore 30-06, stainless synthetic and it's a great gun too, just a little less accurate than the two savages.  I used to have a Remingotn BDL in 300RUM but it didn't shoot very well at all.

That's been my experience with rifles.  Everyone's got their opinions and no matter what you buy somebody here will tell you something bad about it.  I hope you find something that'll make you and your son happy and that you both can enjoy.  Let us know what you come up with.

I very much agree with everything you said.  I'm a little confused about what you said about Kimber OR Montana rifle.  I have a Kimber Montana - it is ONE gun.  A company named Montana something builds a montana action, and some barreled actions, but, to my knowledge, they don't build guns.

Also, while Tikka rifles are less expensive than Kimbers, Sakos are not.  Sakos are at the same level, both price and quality-wise, with Kimber.

Another excellent high end choice that I would add is the Cooper rifle.  Excellent, Excellent, Excellent rifles of super high quality and excellent accuracy.

If you like the A-Bolt so much, why not get him one too?

AFAIK, The Cooper Model 52's start at around $2K for the gun alone, plus $$$ for extras like the inletted Q.D swivel eyes, checkered bolt knob, skeleton buttplate, etc.

They are pretty, though !

Take a serious look at a Sako.  I would start there.  Top it with a nice Meopta or Zeiss Conquest scope  and you will have one superior set up and end up right about at your limit.  You could go cheaper but if you are willing to spend it I doubt you would have buyers remorse.
