S&W model 19, 4"
« on: June 20, 2007, 06:16:16 PM »
Hi guys!

I've just got a used model 19 in decent shape but it needs the front sight orange plastic insert.  Do you know where can I order replacements for it?  Any info will be appreciated.  Thanks.

Call S&W.  They should be more than helpful.

S&W sent me one a few years ago. All you have to do is file it to fit.

Thank you for the options.  I will be calling soon.

I have another question:

What are the known limitations of the M19?
Normally, I use load levels of 38 Special +P and once in a while I use 170gr Speer GDSP at 1250 FPS in my GP100 Rugers or simply factory loads in the 158gr ranges.

Camba:  The limitations of the M19 are few but one thing that caused problems with them in the past was the use of high speed, lightweight bullets.  I had always thought it was the fast burning powders that caused spacers at the end of tyhe cylinder to disintegrate but not so.  Apparently, and after a bunch of discussion, it was the higher speed jacketed slugs that caused forcing cone fractures.

The M19 is a great handgun.  It will handle any cast slug you want to throw down the tube.  My favorite is the 200 gn cast semi-wadcutter and I prefer the use heavy factory powder charges of Winchester powder.  I am not a fan of heavy jacketed bullets in short barrelled magnums and 1250'/sec isn't really all that great when you can throw a 200 gn cast swc out a 1330'/sec.

The M19 seems to be able to handle heavy loads better, at least mine did.  I never had a problem shooting the heavy slugs.  Mikey.

Mikey,

Have you hunted any thing with the 200 gr cast?  If so, How did it performed?
200gr @ 1330fps sound like a 44 magnum load! ;D

Hello Mikey
Very true, what actually happened is the Lightweight 125 Grain or the even Lighter 110 Grain Copper jacketed Bullets hit the forcing cones with such force due to their Light weight and fast speed it Mushroomed them when entering the Breech end of the barrel and cracked the forcing cones from excessive pressures. camba:  the 200 gn swc from my S&W blows right through a whitetail's chest out to 50m.  It has much more 'carry' than any of the 158s (which is why I prefer it in shorter barrels) which Jerry Lester swears by and is continually successful with.  The bullet over that powder charge will bust a shoulder girdle and continue on.  I have yet to recover one of those slugs.  Mikey.

The "K" frame S&W's are my favorite handguns of all time, and i've fired M-19's thousands and thousands of times....  I couldn't even guess how much small game i've harvested with them...

What a great gun to own and use...
