replacing buttstock on Ultra Varmint Choate?
« on: June 12, 2007, 05:30:45 AM »
I'm an NEF/H&R newbie, but learning fast....getting set up to defend my sheep/chickens/rabbits from coyotes, bobcats, foxes.....(mostly at night with spotlight).
Just acquired my first Handie......(a .223 Choate Ultra Varmint Fluted with 4-12x40 Swift)
For aesthetic reasons I thought I would replace the buttstock with a laminated. Can I do this and any other comments you might have would be very appreciated. What is the recommended procedure for removing and replacing the buttstock?

The trigger seems reasonable (pretty heavy but fairly crisp)....does this model have an improved trigger from the factory ? A gunsmith tells me it can't be improved much. I saw the procedure in the Basics here but am reluctant to attempt it myself.
Thank you all mucho grande!
Gary

Welcome to GBO!! You'll find the answers to all your questions in the FAQs and Help sticky, read thru em, you'll be glad you did.

You'll need a longer bolt for a laminated stock, bolt info is in the FAQs. All stocks are interchangable on H&R rifles and shotguns, forends vary a little, specially on the 10ga and 12ga slug gun.

The internals of the SB1 and SB2 frames are all the same, some triggers are great from the factory, others have a lot to be desired, triggers can be honed to just a few ounces if done carefully, but a very safe 2½-3lb trigger can be done yourself or by a competent gunsmith.
