Heres a picture of my naval gun (Ithink)
« on: June 10, 2007, 07:09:28 AM »
It's been completed for 6 months and I still haven't fired it! It's a 2/3 scale 6# by Hern, the carriage is a laminated 2" red oak patterned after South Bend Replicas drawing. For scale I laid my 50Cal Queen Anne pistol in front of it.

Yeah I did make the trunnion caps and wheels, the trunnion caps took a couple of tries before I got what I wanted with heat and bar matching the trunnions dimensions on the gun, the wheels were probably the easiest as well as fun making compared to the rest of the carriage. The axles are wood also with steel sleeves, the steel on the wheels were a bit tough tho, I formed the steel around the wheel and cut them short to create a .060 gap and wire fed them closed which caused them to shrink and stay on ( I guess it's a modern way to install tires on the wooden wheels). The whole project took over 2 1/2 months to complete.

I agree , the attention to detail really makes itself evident it pics #4 & #3, wish I had that kind of talent with wood. Great job on the trunnion caps also.    M223

...wish I had that kind of talent with wood.

I'm sure you can learn it the same way you learned to work metal.

Thanks for the compliments fellas, it makes some of the frustrations that I encountered during its construction worth it.

Beautiful gun. You should be very proud. I also like the cartridge making process. Now get out there and burn some powder!

Rusty Barrels, I'm sorta taking a survey... do all four of your wheels sit flat on the ground, and did you have to work hard to make that happen?

What happens if the ground is not level? does it wobble at all?

Yes it does, but not to much when the barrel is attached, I guess I built it pretty stiff.
