Author Topic: Who makes a bolt action Hornet? (Read 1432 times)

I have a nice Browning 1885 single shot in 22 Hornet but am looking to change to a quality bolt gun. Problem is, no one seems to chamber for this cartridge. The only American (which I would prefer) manufacturer who does is Savage and unfortunately, theirs is also a single shot rifle. Does Ruger still chamber their 77/22 for this round? I've heard good things about Brno but don't know if they chamber for Hornet either. I really want a quality rifle as I've gotten spoiled by the 1885's accuracy. Any recommendations or advice you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Gents.

Yes but you do not want the headache that is a Ruger M77/22 hornet. TRUST ME,

You can buy a CZ527 in the hornet and you will have an excellent rifle

Can you be more specific about the Ruger 77/22? I've examined a new one and they seem to be of reasonable quality. Long ago I owned one and it was pretty accurate too? I wasn't wild about the weird twin rail bolt setup though.

In order to get a 77 hornet to shoot good you'll have to sent it off and have it rechambered the chambers are overly generous and you have weatherby like freebore., My SKS could outshoot 77/22VT.

if you don't believe me just google search "Ruger 22 hornet" I wish I had done so before buying.

Savage chambers two rifles for the 22 Hornet. One is the Model 40 which I believe is complete with their new trigger. The other is one of their older models, still in production, but just not as fancy a version as the Model 40. The Model 40, btw, was written up in one of the gun magazines about a year and a half ago and it looked so good that my brother in law and I split the cost for a new one for my father in law and he just loved it. All I can find is their Model 40 - unfortunately in single shot only - and if that's the case, I'll keep shooting my Browning 1885. Too bad as I like their Accutrigger and might have been persuaded if it had a magazine

CZ (Brno) do a good reasonably priced magazine fed Hornet. And Varmint model as well.

I've also seen a Browning Micro-medallion which looked great.
US in name, but Japanese manufactured.
Probably a bit more expensive though, as would be the European offerings from Anschutz, Weihrauch et al

I own and use the single shot Savage Model 40 with Accutrigger, which I am very pleased with.
Most accurate Hornet that I've ever fired. I have a sneaky suspicion that it is Lakefield Canada manufactured ?
Is anything truly 'American' these days ?

My Weatherby Vanguard Special Varminter in .223 is made in the good old US of Japan, as well

I'd have a look at the CZ 527 in .22 Hornet, if I was you. While it isn't US made, it is a fine little rifle. I never been too impressed with the groups that I've seen the Ruger 77/22 hornets shoot.

Hello guys,

I couldn't help but make a reply, I have a Ruger 77/22 varmint weight and get excellent groups from it. consistently under an inch at 100 yds, Thats good enough for me....Of course I load my own and never messed with factory fodder in the gun either, maybe that has something to do with it..?

I have heard nothing but good about the CZ rifles too, and they are a good looking gun as well.

I have had several of the Ruger 77/22H and they WILL shoot with a little work. Main thing I have found to be the accuracy culprit is the horrible amount of up-pressure under the barrel. I remove this and free-float the barrel. On one I had to put a shim in the bolt as the headspace was off a bit but other than that they seem to be pretty good little rifles. All seem to really benefit from the AI chambering but, then again, most Hornets do. At about 350.00 used not too bad a buy.

I have a Ruger 77/22Hornet with a sporter-weight barrel that really shoots well.

I can get groups of 1 to 1 1/4 inch at 100 yards with my handloads.

I resize my brass just enough to chamber easily.

I suppose you can find a lemon in anything you buy nowadays.

I guess sometimes we find some good ones and I must be one of the lucky ones, because my 77/22 is a good shooter.

IIRC, Cooper makes it's Model 38 in Hornet, as does Phillips & Rogers in their Wilderness Explorer.

I have Hornets, in both a Ruger 77/22H walnut sporter, and a CZ-527 Lux , and actually like the CZ slightly better - since I had it converted to a flush magazine.

The accuracy of both are very good, with a slight edge (in my hands) going to the CZ - both with the same genre Leupy 2-7X Compact scopes/commercial ammo.

Yeah that flush protruding angular magazine is the only thing I am not wild about on the CZ! Could you give me an idea of what it cost to have the "flush" conversion done? Also, could you post a before and after pic - even just an after pic would be great.

Remington imports a mini mauser 22 hornet, they look nice but i havnt heard how they shoot yet, I believe they are a model 799?

You're correct. Remington's 799 "Mauser" is offered in 22 Hornet. MSRP is about $100 more than the CZ. The Remmy is only offered with a brown laminated stock while the CZ is solid walnut. I think the CZ looks nicer and as they are both imported, there is no American manufactured advantage. I've had good feedback on the CZ, but nothing on the Rem. Would love to hear something about it. As of right now, I'm leaning heavily in the direction of the CZ.

The CZ-527 bottom metal/magazine conversion costs $65. I don't have any pics of mine, but here's the website of the guy, Roy, who does it.
It was worth every penny, and more, to me - due to the improvement in styling.
Standard magazines will still fit/function, if a larger mag capacity is ever wanted/needed.

The second hyperlink has step-by-step pics of the process he uses.

Since I live relatively close to him, I've met with him, been in his house/shop, and can verify that he not only does outstanding work, but is a "stand up guy", in the bargain.

I checked his website and he states that they do not offer this conversion for CZ 527's chambered for Hornet anymore. Something about CZ using more plastic in the magazine now days - which makes me wonder about the rest of the rifle if they're already looking for ways to to cheapen it up - ala- Winchester. Bummer!

I have the same problem with the CZ. There is a single-shot conversion that might work, described here: http://www.jamescalhoon.com/pricelist.php (look under SINGLE SHOT FOLLOWER near the bottom of the page)

I have not seen any posts on this, but the description sounds good and the price is right.

Why would you want to ruin the fine lines of a CZ 527 by neutering the magazine?

If you want something that looks like a remchester then buy a remchester.

Well - first, there's just not much else left to "cheapen", since just about all that's left is the steel barreled action & walnut stock.

Besides, I'm sure Roy'd convert one, if you laid hands on an earlier style magazine, or an entire earlier rifle.

WHY ? - you have a great single shot - the Hornet is one of the few cartridges that IMO is made for a nice single shot - small case w/rim that you can reload quickly if you have to. I am the last person to talk someone out of a new rifle however you have a nice rifle not sure other offerings are a step up - CZ would be #1 choice for quality and price - Rugger's shoot better w/handloads in 35-40 gr. range or Hornady 35's as above mine gets a bit ragged.

Browning offers the A-bolt in 22 Hornet (or atleast they did 2 years ago).Mine shot really well and I shouldnt have traded it off.

I see that Kimber now chambers it in their model 82.That would be a sweet rifle,if you can afford it.
