Free Floating Remington Model Seven
« on: June 09, 2007, 02:37:05 AM »
I picked up a model seven  7mm-08 in stainless synthetic. I have only shot about 8 groups. Best is about 1.75". Worst is over 4".

I usually float the barrels. I wondered what anybody else has experienced with floating the barrel on this particular model.

Thanks!

That's unusual for a remington to shoot group that large.  That notwithstanding, if it's accuracy that you want to improve, then I would first have the barrel re-crowned and do a trigger job, as this usually noticeably improves accuracy.

As for free floating the barrel, I have been told that the remington plastic stocks are such junk, that it is actually better to get a GOOD after market stock, like McMillan, HS Precision, or the medalist, and THEN do a free floating job.  Again, most M7s, even with their synthetic stocks, are shooters, but I have been told that glassing the action, and thus free floating the barrel, on the cheap plastic stocks is kinda not worth it.

If you do the above, then I see no reason why your gun shouldn't shoot MOA or better with at least one factory load.

Hey Rodbuster,
I have the same rifle and love it!  I hate to say this but, with a couple of different loads it shoot 1/2 inch or less.  This rifle is stock except for a trigger job.  My last experience with another model 7 was not real great.  I had a model 7 .243.  It shot great and I got a big idea of buying a new camo stock for Cabelas.  It was a factory stock.  After mounting the action in the new stock it shoot 2-3 inch groups.  I had stock bedded and floated the barrel and made it worst.  The gunsmith put the fore end pressure back with little difference.  The biggest problem was before receiving the new camo stock, I sold the other stock on Ebay(this was very stupid).  I finally gave up trying.  I sold the .243 and bought this model 7 7mm-08 used on the computer.  I received this model 7 and noticed someone had shimmed the front action.  I called the previous owner he said it would not group.  I took out the shim and noticed the screw in a scope mount was striped.  Since I put the pressure back and fixed the bad screw it shoots about everything I feed it about 1 inch or better.  This is my favorite rifle.  I hope some of this may give you an idea to try.  Goodluck!

I don't have a 7 but I do have a 700. Mine is floated and the trigger is done. Mine is a 7mm mag with 160 gr sierra SBT's.
This gun shoots like a whistle pig rifle.  Ron

Deerman,

Sounds like floating may or may not help.

I went to the range yesterday and used a couple of different loads with 140 accubonds and 139 interbonds. I loaded them a little longer OAL. Both shot a little over an inch.
So, maybe i am on to something. if one of those loads continues to shoot around an inch I'll be satisfied.
