Wild Imports cannon?
« on: June 04, 2007, 02:42:48 AM »
Hi Guys,
Has anyone dealt with this company? I am considering getting the 1/2 scale British field (golf ball) cannons as a gift for a friend. Any info on the company or in particular this cannon would be welcome.

http://www.wildimports.com/1_2_scale_british_field_cannon.htm

Thanks,
Steve

BG Bore,

Welcome to the site. I have not had any personal dealings with wildimports. I know that they have been around for sometime and they distribute for a guy in Argentina. I believe this is his site http://www.osvaldogatto.com.ar/catalogo.php?cat=4. I know it doesn't really help unless you can read Spanish.

I can tell you that I have recently purchased the same cannon that you mention as a second hand item. I couldn't help it. It was an impulse thing as I'm always "intoodeep" ;D. Anyway, the cannon should be here in the next week or so, and I can give you an opinion at that time if it helps.

They do state that they can handle a lead ball and golfball. You may want to email them and ask about the liner that they use.

I bought one 3 years ago the FULL SCALE 1805 HMS VICTORY NAVAL CANNON

44MM GOLF BALL 1.73")       http://www.wildimports.com/new_page_2.htm

I like the cannon however it is not 22" in length..,its 20" the liner is 1/16 inch Stainless .
I bought it without as much knowledge of cannon construction as I currently have  (Thanks GBO)

The breach is 3 1/2 "  in diameter with a 1.73" bore this leaves about a 7/8 " wall thickness . There isnt a powder chamber the bore is 1.73 to the end of the breach with a 7/8 wall ......., This is very much under built. .
I feel safe with it because I fire under  charged blanks.

The 6 pounder and the 1/2 scale 6 pounder looks to have substantially more metal in the breach area from the photos ., without  measuring I couldn't know however from the photos.., I wish I had gotten one of those instead...,they "look" great.

I believe ., (Again from photos) the cannon you want and the cannon I have,....,  are differant carriages...., but the same barrel.    Which means I have to wonder..., is this barrel a copy of HMS Victorys Signal gun..., or is it a 1/2 scale british field gun? It couldnt be both......, could it?  I think its basically a barrel they configured for their purpose.

Would I trust it with an actual lead projo  to fit the bore......., No-Way !
I really enjoy this cannon and it looks good in our bar. I know how to fire it. Will I leave to others in my will after I am gone ..., no-way ..., I hate to say this., but I will probably have it destroyed before someone further down the road than me gets hurt.

Like I say I like the cannon....., but theres my 2 pieces of 8.

Tropico,

Thanks for report. I think you have confirmed my thoughts. I had the same feeling about the liner when I saw their photos. It did seem too thin to me. I'm sure it is fine for signaling and GB's but, definitely not solid shot. I still look forward to when mine arrive since, I purchased it for less then I could build it for.

Thanks for the input everyone.
I would like to hear from InTooDeep when you receive the cannon and have a chance to check it out. Blanks and the odd golf ball is the intended usage by my friend. I did email (Last Saturday) the company about the liner but have not received a reply as of this date.

BG Bore,

No problem I'll let you know. Please let me know if you get a reply from wildimports. I'd like to know their answer but, it doesn't seem to positive if you haven't received a reply as of now.

If you are looking for an affordable golf ball cannon, look no further than Gunsmoke Cannons out of MI.  I bought one from them, with recommendations for this forum.  It has been fun.  They are less then $500.

Their e-mail address is gunsmokecannons@aol.com

They also sell on Gunsamerica.com  http://www.gunsamerica.com/976886014/Non-Guns/Cannons-Modern-Replica/1_3_4_GOLF_BALL_FIELD_CANNON.htm

Good luck with your search,

BG Bore,

Well, it's here. I'll post a report tomorrow when I get a chance. If, you have any questions please PM me and I'll try to include them in my post. I can tell you that Tropico's post is pretty much "Spot On" regarding the tube.

Wow I like that percussion cap slap hammer ya got there  ! .,It is the same barrel., and yea i am happy with it .,please don't anyone get me  wrong.

Oh and i had one more revelation........, I will not destroy it.... In the Philippines..., my retirement...,the freedom there is .,well...,I can do alot lets  put it that way. I think I will build a concrete and marble tiled carriage .,fill the tube with concrete and incorporate that into my headstone !!! I don't believe I could do that here.....,probably some law or ordinance to stop me    But there I believe my Pirate  may live on in that way ! Cemetaries there are much differant than here.

 BG Bore,

I was going to try to do a lengthy report on this but, I changed my mind and am going to keep it simple.

The tube on this piece is 20.375" in length. Not the 22" stated by wildimports. The liner is not stainless as with Tropico's and does not seem to be seamless.  The wall thickness in the breech area is 1". I am still happy with the piece but, would NOT fire a solid projectile from it. I am still baffled by wildimports website stating that it can fire a 44mm lead ball. I would really like to hear from them telling us more about their liners. Maybe one of our moderators could give them an open invitation to this website and posting. Who knows maybe they can straighten us out in regards to their liner and maybe even become a Sponsor.

The bottom line is that I still like the piece as it looks good and is flashy (must be a Vegas thing). ;D  If you are looking for just a noise maker and intend to fire golf ball or two then I would recommended one of our sponsors golf ball cannons as they would be more of a workhorse and save you a few $$$ too.

I hope this helps with your decision. If, you have any other questions or, need certain photos just let me know and I can provide those for you.

That's is one of wildimports add on's. I think the original owner paid $75 for it.

My thanks intoodeep.
I think the Vegas flash will be the determining factor. This is to be a 50th birthday present for a friend and looks count for alot. He is very likely to fire a few blank loads with this per year and leave it at that. I intend to caution him about the cannon and the strength of the tube.

BG Bore,

Did you ever hear back from wildimports? I think you are a heck of a guy to give a gift like this. I'm sure your friend will be pleased as punch to get it. Mine does look real good in the living room. I guess it's a "furniture artillery" kinda thing.... ;D  ;D

intoodeep,
I don't want to fly false colors. Arrr!
His wife is getting him the cannon. I was asked for advice and recommendations. I came up with a list of options and she made the final choice.
Any word I receive from Wild Imports I will post to the board, no word received as of this date. I will also report on the cannon as soon as possible.
