I know nothing about crossbows
« on: June 03, 2007, 04:58:15 AM »
I'm an avid hunter but know nothing about cross bows.  I'm interested in archery hunting to expand my hunting opportunities.  That said I've had two shoulder surgeries and two more to come and will never be able to use a standard bow again.  My brother sent me a Proline MK V 150 lb draw crossbow but I can't seem to locate the company on line.  The website I did find stinks.  I bought a book on crossbow hunting but the writer is long winded and more interested in telling stories.  Please help a wnnna be.

What are you looking for information on the bow or hunting with a cross bow?

I know nothing about your bow
for  hunting with them take everything you know about bow hunting and apply it. it really is not that much difference  the only real difference is  the bow is shot vertical  to you and the string is held in place by the bow.

Bolt length and measurement, weights. Safety's,  do's and don'ts, maintenance the basics.  I plan to use a tree stand or still hunt in the brush with a range closer than 40-45 yrds.   I'll hunt blacktail deer and Black bear.

You should check to see what the maker suggest for arrow weight and length as well as nock style.

they will also tell you how to care for it.

I use use a good rail lube every 100 shots or so. I am using the microlon that tenpoint sells, I also put a drop on every cam and pin. I also put a drop along the sides of the trigger and such.

Basic safety is the same as with any bow and hunting, but they say you should not walk with an arrow on the rail, keep your thumb and fingers well under he flight rail, never pull up a bow with the arrow on the rail

What RickyP said was good advice to add to it. A Rope cocker will make cocking easier. If your shoulders are real bad check on a crank for your xbow. Doing a Quick check I think that Darton made the Proline Series. It seems they are discontinued and Darton now sells the Great Lakes Crossbows. I would contact Darton:   If you have question regarding our products, parts, or warranty service, please  contact us by phone at 989-728-9511.  They should be able to tell you what arrows to use and what else you need to know about that particular crossbow. I have no idea how old that crossbow is either but they should be able to tell you. Check back with us and let us know what you found out then we can go from there with help for you.   Jim
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I've had rotator cuff surgery on both shoulders (3 on 1, 1 on the other). I shoot an Excaliber Vixen using the rope cocker with NO problems.  That is the only 1 shot without problems.  Don't want the hassle of wheels and I can easily string and unstring the bow with the proper devices.  It is amazingly accurate and a pleasure to shoot!!!

Yep Excalibers are great xbows I really like my Wolverine which is the same as a Vixen in performance only a earlier bow.

Thanks guys that's what I needed to hear.  I call the Monday, it's too late today!  I looked at the rope cockers in Cabelas and that seems the way to go.  I'll have both shoulder operated on sometime this summer and I beleive alittle time in the woods will help my recooperation ;D
