Scope Bell above Barrel Question
« on: June 01, 2007, 04:51:06 AM »
Hey all~

Quick question.  I mounted a scope last night and the bell of the scope is just above the barrel.  There is enough space to slide 3 stacked dollar bills between the bell and barrel but not 4.  Am I safe?  I think I should be, there can't be that much barrel whip and such, probably much ado about nothing.....

thanks

That's pretty close, but it will depend on the caliber and recoil.  You probably would be ok, if it is 223/243/ range.  I would be a little concerned if it was a 30/06.

But if it ain't touching...........go for it.

My unprofessional opinion.

I've got a couple rifles with scopes mounted like that, the only problem I see with it, is scope covers won't work!! ;D Unless you slot the bottom of the cover. ;) It's also tricky getting oil on the barrel in that spot, patches are too thick.

I have one like that on my .308. I had to notch the scope cover for it to go on. No other problems.

I have also had to notch a scope cover, and never had any problems at all.  Larry

Well add my name to the list. I have had nair an 1/8 between hammer to scope... you would think it touching if not held against the light at the right angle :o ;D.. a little close for comfort, but no problems so far... Depends on good tight fitting rings as to if your scope will suffer abuse from the hammer in such an instance.

I don't think that it would be a problem, but you would probably be able to see if the rings/scope move any later on.  I had a Legend scope on my 7-08 Rem 700,  The objective barely cleared the Weaver one-piece base.  At some point accuracy went and lo unto thee--the scope had moved.

I guess that the larger issue would be to tighten up my scope mounts.............
