I agree with Zachary, no one has been very critical of the 11 year old. MY only suggestion is that he spends a little more time getting used to shooting such a large revolver.

I also, don't like someone bragging about taking 16 shots to kill a domestic animal in an enclosure either. And a back up rifle was definitely in order to take the animal humanely. No animal deserves 3 hours of torture.

And about making a bad shot,,,, this would be your proverbial "side of a barn" he was shooting at. What?, about a 2-3' kill zone. I put that on the father.

Canned Hunts are what give legitimate hunters a bad name with the liberals.

I dont personaly think this is the kids fault. I must ask why was a 11 year old hunting with a pistol? This doesnt make sense to me. He would have been more effective with a rifel. thats just my opinion. -A

I read the articles from FOX NEWS and CBS NEWS.
Both said 8 shots.And the FOX TV news also said 8 shots.
Still, ya gotta wonder, WHERE he was shooting AT ?

I think many good points have been made here. One, the kid should have been using a marlin or Winchester 30-30 rather than .500 revolver. In Florida, I think it might even be illegal for an 11-year old to hunt with a handgun. Second, shot placement is the most important factor, and a young boy will not have sufficient mastery of the weapin before hunting with it. Thirdly, we need more young hunters, so don't dog the kid. As for there not being any such thing as a feral hog that big, check out Brimstone Outfitters Tennessee Terrorz page and read the previous issue of boar Hunter magazine on the feral hog killed in Fayetteville, GA.

I can believe that it took 16 shots to down the big one.I personally witnessed a guy shooting a 600 pd. boar headon at 20' and the bullets bounced off his head.It was a headon shot but it did daze the hog long enough to go get a rifle and finish the job. i've also watched 44 mag. ammo bounce off along with several friends that have had the same experience.
I did measure pentatration with my 445 supermag in a rifle that was clocking 2144' with a 265 gr. bullet,and I got 37" at 140 yds. front to back.But I also shot a 275 pd. boar through the shield at 40 yds. and it penertrated through the shield,shoulder and both sides of the ribs,but stoped at the off shoulder.I've blown the heart and lungs out a 5" exit hole with a 300 Wby at 150 yds,and the sow kept on running like nothing had happened. I've shot hundred's of hog's over the last 10 yrs. and I have alot of unbelieveable story's that I witnessed,so nothing surprise's me anymore. Digger

When I read about this story on the Drudge Report it said 8 shots, a 3 hour chase and a finishing shot at point blank range. Whether it was 8 shots or 16 shots is not the issue. The issue is that if it takes 8 shots and a three hour chase, he was either a piss poor shot or was using an inadequate weapon or perhaps both. I can't imagine anyone being proud of such a disgraceful display of poor shooting and abysmal sportsmanship.

Personally, after reading about this atrocity I was rooting for the hog. Too bad he didn't kill at least one of his tormentors. They deserved it.

This kind of killing (note this IS NOT hunting) where people kill tame animals in a pen will destroy our pastime. Nothing gives real hunters a worse image than these idiots.

That a father teaches his son about "hunting" in this manner makes me sad and scared.

I was not advertising. I was putting together the story of the hog that was "trapped" brought in to a high fence location and killed for 1500 dollars for all the world to see. If anything my post showed how despicable this whole thing was. If anything was an advertisement the first post would be. I just followed links and dug deeper than the reporters who spread this junk on the mainstream media.

What honest, deep down satisfaction can anyone really take from shooting a fenced in animal? If that appeals to you then why not buy a nice angus steer. Then unless you shoot it up too much at least you will have some nice steaks.

I'm not going to throw stones at the kid, firearm choice, techniques, etc.

My question stems from doubts that the animal was as big as they say. Looking over the site, all the pictures appear to have been taken from a position of forced perspective. The humans are always located behind the animal and the focal depth of the pictures make me think that someone is pulling something. Then they talk about it being weighed on a certified scale, but the owner of the scale wasn't there to witness the weigh-in.

Maybe I'm just too skeptical. If it was me, I'd have called in the local extension agent, someone from the DNR, local news crews or anyone else I could think of to verify the size of the monster. I'd of had the pope bless the scales if that's what it took, but I'd have solid evidence that the beast was the size I was saying it was.

i have seen a 1000 pound hog in a zoo once. he was not very fast and i think he die some years later. A good kill for a 11 year old but when i see a body i will believe it. But i live in FL and weirder things happen here or in the south

like there a female lion living on a island in the middle of the bay here, I wonder if i killed this old lion if i would get on the news???

I can agree with that. There is a local outfit that brought in an elk @ 12 midnight and the "hunter" was there hunting it the next morning before daylight. Was said to be running the fence until noon when the "hunter" finally got it to stand still long enough to shoot it.

This is the junk that makes me angry. If you have a large ranch and invest in the animals I view that different. Shooting these things in basic pens makes me sick.

yep ! i hunted boar in an 1100 acre enclosure , it seemed a good hunt , the boar i got was aged at 9 years old and had been there that long i was told ! there were elk and Buffalo there also and to be honest it didn't look like it would be much of a hunt , since we could get with in a few yards . The hogs on the other hand either charged or ran away so finding a good hog and setting up a shot was a challenge , The funny thing was there was a hog there that was guesstamated to be 800 lbs , we all looked but passed it up , he stayed in the same place all the time , no challenge !

You were almost certainly lied to in that regard. Fenced operations do not make a profit by feeding animals for nine years before they are killed. In MOST but not all they feed the critters to keep them alive because they don't have enough room for them to feed on natural food. In MOST but not all the animals are stocked just to be shot and are shot within a very short time after being stocked.

Unless you saw evidence of them breeding in the pen I'd not believe any story of an animal being there longer than a couple months and most of the time not even that long.

I do know of at least one such exception but I think they are no longer in business. Carter's Pasture in Florida has an 1100 plus acre enclosure of the thickest jungle you've ever seen. It has no telling how many hogs in it and they do raise in the wild and do feed on natural foods in addition to the corn at feeders. In that one you will be shooting hogs born and raised in the enclosure as hogs are not stocked but have been on the land since long before the fence went up. I'm sure there are a few other such but not many. I think Mike has shut down the operation or at least the last time I looked he was going to.

Graybeard you may be correct i have no way to know other than what the outfitter / guide told me , they called it a cave hog , a hybrid between a Russian boar and something else in the enclosure . I did not witness any hogs making bacon that i am sure of ! the place is in Tenn. i believe you may have mentioned it in another post but could be mistaken . There were alot of hogs of different sizes though ! I was told that mine at around 250 was as big as they get , and most hunters won't shoot one they want a big hog , which there were a plenty ! thanks for your insight and any more information on the subject you may offer , i hate to be lied to !

Inside a fence UNLESS you see baby pigs on up to various adult sizes assume they were all stocked. If you see a variety of sizes from recently born to large adults and all sizes in between assume they are breeding in the enclosure. IF they run dogs and you see nothing that looks to be under 100 pounds in size assume all are stocked and taken soon after stocking. If you do that you'll generally be correct. Almost always assume you are being lied to about some part of the operation. That is about a given really.

Which TN operation are you talking about? I hunted at Tellico Junction once many years ago. He admitted all hogs were stocked but most were caught on the adjoining National Forest land in traps which were evident in walking around the area. If they liked the size of the trapped hog they turned it loose inside the fence, if they didn't they released it back to the NF land. The traps were placed along the fence line with holes cut into the fence at those locations for the hogs to enter the traps which were on the fenced side of the place. The guide admitted to me that any time a hunter requested in advance a hog over 300 pounds they purchased it from an outside source and stocked it in a special smaler enclosure just for that "hunt". Otherwise whatever size they trapped was available in the larger (about 2000 acres I think I was told) enclosure which was definitely NOT hog proof all the way around the perimeter as I saw places the fence was down.

The guide showed me a trap torn up almost beyond use that he said they had trapped the largest boar he had ever seen come from the NF land about a week before I was there and he almost destroyed the trap. It had been killed by a hunter at regular rates in the larger enclosure as that's where it was released.

They had no scales (claimed someone had stolen them - the lie I figure I was told by them) and so weights had to be estimated. From my experience with hogs I think mine was about 200 pounds give or take a bit.
