« on: May 11, 2007, 10:59:52 AM »
Just wondering what all you guys have the most success on as far as store bought stuff, I catch alot of bullheads on powerbait fish flavor, but never a channel,  and thats the only brand i  have used, I would like to have some more kinds on hand incase im targeting other fish and want to switch to catfishing without having cut bait or livers, Does strikeking catfish dynomite work as good as some claim?

Inrut24/7,

I have a friend that uses the strike king dynomite bait and he swears by it. I have never used it personally, but he told me I should try it so I might give it a shot.

Try some bacon or salt pork.  I've caught channels and blues on both; 16.5# blue on the salt pork.

Had to chime in.

Several years ago, my brother in law got me catfish bait for Christmas, in what he thought was a joke.  The stuff was called "Nabba-Cat", came in a small plastic, butter-tub type thing, and looked/smelled, for all the world like human poo.....

Thing is, once I had the nerve to try it, I caught a never-ending stream of fish!  When I went into his store, and asked where he'd found that killer stuff, he thought I was joking.  Afterwards, it became a local hit.  I haven't seen it in a while, but I'm sure it was some simple kind of dough/stink combination.  What a hoot.  Aside from bait, it made great practical joke material, if you had a friend with an old, seldom-used pickup that sat out back, and could use some "character"....

We use frozen shrimp from wal-mart (the kind you eat)

Medium size while drift fishing. Try it youll love it!

I've caught as many catfish on crickets as anything I've tried. The only other bait I commonly use is chicken liver, I buy Bridal wrap cut it into 4" squares and twist ties to wrap around the liver to keep in on the hook.  I've found this to stay on the hook very well but its still easy to take off when needing to replace the liver after a cat has took a bite.  Bridal wrap is also open weaved enough to allow easy hook sets, unlike pieces of womens hose we used to use.

Chicken hearts!  Leave them in the sun for a couple of days and hold your nose!

Best thing around here is fresh cut blue gill or sun perch. Heads work the best the mid sections with the guts then tails, I think the reason is that cat's and flatheads try to eat fish head first so the don't get the fins catching on the mouth. At least thats my theory.

But for store bought bait, I think any stink bait works. We use hog wild blood bait here more then anything.

i haven't bought store bait in years, except chicken livers when i take the kiddos out.  try taking along an ultralight rod on your next trip with an el cheapo dry fly.  thow it along the bank and catch some bream.  use them cut or live when the sun's going down, or in holes while the sun is up.  also, you can buy a 30 dollar cast net that will catch shad and bream like crazy.  umbrella nets are great for minnows when you bait them with bread, and they are usually under 10 bucks for the 40" size.  all these will give you natural, native bait that the fish are eating, and they pay for themselves in one or a couple uses.
