No more WSM's in Howa 1500?
« on: May 06, 2007, 06:12:38 PM »
Checked the  Legacy Sports International web site and .270, 7mm and 300 WSM's are no longer listed as caliber options.

What's happening?

What I predicted when they first came out. Folks are finally realizing there is no magic to the short fat rounds after all and sales are dropping like a thrown rock. Ten years from now no one will be making rifles for them and ammo will be hard to find. They failed to live up to the hype and now that enough folks have them they are finally realizing it.

I read somewhere recently that the general consensus is that most manufacturers will be phasing out production relatively soon.
Don't remember where I read that "prediction"  (...on Graybeard maybe??  ;) )

I feel sorry for guys who picked those up. Obviously ammo will always be available, but at what $$

Just one more reason I love my 8mm Mauser  ::)

I see just the opposite happening, with the 270wsm and 300wsm. Most every gun manufactor has more this year than last. Howa is he first, if they start dropping them, then again I don't see Howa as a industry leader.
Rem., Ruger ,Tikka ,Savage , Browning, etc, all offer more models in these cal. than last year, and look at midwayusa ammo. Last year they offered 3 or 4 loadings for the 270wsm. Now there's 17 differant fac. loads.
Don't sound like a "phase-out" to me.
Come on GB, git ya one, we won't tell.

I got to agree with Dancoman, at least in part.  I see steady sales of .270 wsm's and 300 wsm's.

The other calibers of wsm's seem slow.  Wssm's are really slow.  Saum's are really, really slow.

I'd agree with Graybeard in that wssm's and saum's are soon to die......

As I've stated before IMHO, the 270wsm and 300wsm  WILL survive. The 7wsm and 7mmRUM are up in the air. The 300RUM will live on. The wssm and the rem saum's will not survive due to the 270wsm and 300wsm. As the saum's are great rounds (exspecially the 300saum), rem was too slow coming out of the gate. Winchester Won that one.
I know there's a debate that most of these cal. are too close to others, but so are a lot of the old originals. A man could that a 22lr, 223, and 30-06 and hunt anything in NA, BUT WHAT FUN WOULD  THAT BE.

I was sorry to see that they dropped the 6.5 Swede also.  I don't think I saw a 7mm08 listed in their standard line either.  Seems they're going for the more basic calibers.  Kinda too bad.

I can see the 270 and 300 wsm's being around for the long run,I'm reloading for mine so I should be OK anyway. The 270 wsm was and is a needed caliber, all we had was the standard and the Weatherby the WSM fills that gap, probaly my favorite rifle I have right now.

I similarly think that the .270WSM and the .300WSM will stick around.  The 7mmWSM, on the other hand, I think will go quietly into the night.

As to the SAUMs, I think that all of them will die.  Heck, when Remington started chambering guns in WSMs, you KNOW that Remington essentially conceded defeat.

Oh, and the .325WSM, I don't think it's gonna survive much longer either.

The WSSMs were dead before they even hit the ground.

The music you hear is Taps being played for the short mags.  I believe the .300 WSM will survive, don't have a clue about the .270WSM and wouldn't bet a nickel on anything else.

Funny Nosler chambered there custom rifle in 270 WSM this year.  The cost of ammunition may be eating into WSM sales.  I reload and it is a bit cheaper.  The .270, 300, and maybe the 325WSM will survive.  All one has to do is pick up a 30-06 and then a 300WSM to see why there is an interest in the 300WSM.  It is not so much the cartridge as it is how handy the rifle is and with a bit more power than the 30-06.  If I can tote an 7 pound 10 ounce gun all day as opposed to a 9 pound gun all day and get 200 fps more with a shorter barrel, this makes sense to me. The WSSM's are toast they don't feed well at all and dont offer that much more.  Short action, light weight, 4 shots, 2950 FPS with a 180 grain Accubond, enough for this Georgia boy.

Hmmmm I have never bothered with any of the new fangled short cartridges regardless what they are called. Always thought it was nowt but a sales gimmick and only there to catch those who must have the latest thing regardless if it's any good or not.

Cannot understand how they can be called Magnums either? a Magnum is a larger vessel and the term was "Borrowed" from the Wine industry.

Oh and one more thing ......................... Calibre is the size of Bore and has absolutley nothing to do with chambering at all! The WSM's and WSSM's etc are cartridges  and NOT calibres.

I know, I know.... howa makes a great shooting rifle for the money. I've heard it online and from my neighbor, guys I work with.....but honestly they could drop the entire howa line and it wouldn't bother me a bit. this doesn't signal the end and the sky isn't falling.

I have a new Browning A Bolt 270 WSM and I have yet to get any accuracy out of it.

I originally bought it with a Leupold scope on it and didn't like it.

I then went out and bought a new Bushnell 3200 Elite 5 x 15 x 40

The ammo costs as much as the gun.

Shooting one factory round is like shooting 5 ( 30 - 06 ) rounds when you are comparing price.

It does not kill a deer any deader.  All it does is makes a bigger bang!

I have a howaby vanguard in 270 wsm, if it wasnt for a raffle i probally wouldnt own one, I was going to sell it when i decided i needed a bigger bore groundhog gun,  It shoots alot better than my ruger m77 7mm mag and ruger m77 275 roberts, which might not say to much, the only bolt gun i have that shoots better is my old 788 rem 222, I would take a howa over a remington, ruger or winchester any day.
