629 classic 5"

In yet another turn of events I came across this 629 in 98%+ condition for $500.  I'm trying to work him for $450 or should I pay the 5 bills and call it good?  I haven't had a big bore Smith in 20+ years.

if its a dealer as him to go all fees and taxes out the door for 500. about the same as 450

Is it a 629-3? I like them better than later ones. 629-4 is the newest I usually buy. $500 is probably a fair price but of course less would be even better for you.

Well, we stuck the deal at $500 because it comes with some stuff, a holster, RCBS carbide dies, some brass and factory shells, the rear sight, and a mounted tasco red dot scope.  And I'm guessing (I don't have it here yet) that it is a 629-3 or 4 because he bought it new more than 5 years ago.  It's a private, local transaction so no tax or shipping fees.  I may take the red dot off and put a 2X scope in its place or just use the factory sights.  I'll be picking it up later this week.

Yep it's a 629-4, bought new in '96, and to my everlasting embarrassment it has a 6 1/2" barrel not a 5" (I'm getting a new gun, I'm getting a new gun, I'm getting a new gun.  What kind of gun is it?  I told you!  A new gun!)  I have not yet measured the dot size of the scope yet but, it looks to be either 3 or 4 MOA.  Range report Friday.  Did I tell you I got a new gun!

I sold the Red Dot before I even had a chance to shoot it (today).  I was very impressed with the Hogue grips as the gun never bit at the inside base of my thumb where the .357 Security Six does.  But those full power 240 grain loads sure do make the gun move around a bit, not to mention the muzzle blast.  I will be making a batch of shells consisting of 7 or 8 grains of Power Pistol behind a 240 jacketed HP for a  plinking round.  I'll load up some cast bullets just as soon as I can get some.

The X frame grip that S&W sells will also fit your Classic and covers the backstrap with nice soft rubber.

I think I just might buy one of those X frame grips.  While I'm at it, does anyone know where I can get a partridge front sight?  I would like it better than the red ramp.

7 Grains of Power Pistol behind a 240 grain XTP bullet was most excellent fun.  2 inch 25 yard groups off the sandbags was normal.  I really like this gun.

S&W sells replacement patridge front sights. Check the height of yours and call them.

Somebody give me some additional info about the X frame grip, please.  What will it do for me except remove some dead weight from my wallet?  Will it fit my 4" 629 that I bought a couple of years back?

It only fits if your gun has a round butt. The grip covers the backstrap in soft rubber and fits larger hands better. I wish it was available for square butt guns.

Yes they do, $39.34 + shipping for 3.  One at .100", .150" and .200".  Didn't need the whole set but, they say I do.  I will be buying them.

I love my 5" "Classic". It is superbly accurate and very pleasant to shoot.
