Turkey Report?
« on: May 03, 2007, 08:23:39 AM »
Anybody out there turkey hunting in PA? I was out Mon & Tues (4/30 - 5/1) in Center Co (SGL 93). Looks like too early - had some mostly halfhearted gobbling but no real interest. One of my buddies did manage to get one interested, but had him intercepted by a real hen just out of shotgun range.

Well, so far (Westmoreland county) the only birds that have been unlucky enough to been shot are ones that have been called in soon after morning flydown. We are gettin some gobbles to our calls, I've had 2 come in range, but thick brush wouldn't let me shoot. Mostl'y when they gobble it's to let you know "hey...I'm over here and I'm not comin over there".

Well, here I am on the 16th. Still "birdless". But....I gotta tell ya. This is my 2nd year of turkey hunting and I am hooked like a junkie on (insert whatever new stuff they use today here)! I've had 4 birds come to me, and because of my poor setup I have not had the opportunity to get a shot. But, I'm learnin fast. Even if I don't get one it doesn't matter (local store $5.99...you know) This callin stuff and havin 'em come in is a hoot!

But....let me tell you how I really feel! ;D

I've only been able to hunt on the Saturdays, and once they hit the ground the gobbles stop.  I ticks me off cause every Monday on the way to work I see them strutting in the back yards of my neighbors.  Go figure.  One chance left, and at this point I'm not feeling too lucky.  But if it was easy it wouldn't be fun.

Update: I've have to describe my experience this year as "tepid". Work responsibilities have cut into my hunting time, but I've hunted three counties (Center, Carbon, and Pike) and have found there to be a lack of turkey noise (and Turkeys?) wherever I have hunted. Last year, it seemed that every time I stepped out of the cabin in the morning, I could hear gobbling. This year, it was much quieter, and it didn't seem like the birds would respond to anything I did.
I'm done - looking forward to doing some shooting this summer.

I went out with my daughter on Friday 5/18 and we walked out of the woods with two 20 pounders. Great morning!

Thats great!  Were they talking or quiet. I have not had any luck this year calling.  The only birds I did see were fly downs.

The first two that came in were quiet. These two didn't start talking until they saw the decoys.
