I have used several different manufactures dot scopes mostly on revolver and contender barrels.  Have a BSA sitting here that keeps tellin me how good it would look on my Colt AR might have to try it this weekend, for grins and giggles.  The only bad thing about the BSA is the 4 moa dot.

I just put a BSA red dot on my Ar-15 and I like it. It has the 4 or 5 minute dot. I have used red dots on other rifles and I like them. It may seem odd, but I do seem to get a little better accuracy from the 5-min dot than you would expect. I haven't done any real serious groupings, but I was shooting military surplus and my 50 yard, 3-shot  groups were around an inch.

Just wondering how long the average battery life is on some of these red dots?

I haven't tried this one, but on an older Tasco I left it on overnight on the highest setting. After 24 hours, it was still running, but the dot was noticably dimmer. If you only use it occasionally, they may last a while.

I have an aimpoint red dot on my REM.I use this rifle in the tight stuff, shots normaly under fifty yards. It has been one of my best buys ever, the battreys last a long time which is just as well because i am always forgeting to turn it off.The only thing off puting is the price of the things.GOOD LUCK,,Jack. 8)

i just finished testing battery life on an Adco red dot.  I left it on for 10 hours a day to simulate a typical hunting trip. I also left it on for 1 -24 hour period( not part of the test, just forgot to turn it off one night.) The battery lasted 10 days.  I was set on power level 6 (0-11) the mid range.  After 6 days the dot was as bright as te first day.  Days 7-9 it was much dimmer although still quit visible. Day 10 much dimmer but still visable but i had to hunt for the dot.  Not to bad for a $3.00 battery n a $100.00 scope.

Since I hunt exclusively with quick shooters and all of my hunting rifles wear red dots, I guess you'd have to include me in this group.  8)

I've found them better for me than scopes, in that they're quicker to acquire the target, and provide a more prominent aiming point than a standard crosswire reticle, and (for me) the fact that they don't magnify is a definite plus.  Since I "game shoot" with both eyes open, the dot is very prominent in my line of sight, and easily finds its wayto my target area.

When I'm hunting in temperatures near 0 fahrenheit, I find that the batteries on some of my models have to be replaced every 3-4 days, but at temperatures at or near freezing, they will last 2-3 weeks.
Hunting is Exciting!  Bolt actions are BORING!!
Don't mix the two!
