cold steel tomahawk

 are cold steel tomahawks any good how do they hold an edge and are they soft steel

I had a chance to briefly hold, and throw, the CS's at a rendezvous last summer.  The steel in them doesn't appear to be "hard", but then most  axe/tomahawk steels aren't...they're tough instead. My 60 year old tomahawk that belonged to me dad isn't.  Beyond that I can't say much about them.

I have a cold steel Rifleman hawk. Not a sharp edge but throws well and splits kindling ok. Try Fort Turner hawks.

I just got mine in the mail yesterday with my RCBS reloading stuff. I bought the Riflemans hawk. I didn't throw it yet but i would assume it would stick well into trees because its very top heavy. The only thing I'm concerned about is that theres is a little set screw in the head that keeps it attached to the handle. Also, the head has slight play in it. No big deal, it was only 20.00. I like the weight that is has for its size, the website says it weighs 32 oz. I can drive it really deep in my chopping block. I'll let you know how it throws.

Before you throw the hawk, remove the set screw in the head. My CS trail hawk has a very good friction fit without the set screw. As you throw it, the screw will start backing out and let the head slide down the shaft putting a big grove in the handle. IMHO
