Bipod or Not?

Was reading about the forarm fixture on the handi barrels. I'm guessing that a bipod isn't the best thing to do to a handi. So getting to the point, what do most of you guys do for your varmit handis? ???

I have a BC in 45-70 and use cross sticks under the wood fore piece and shoot at 200 yds--so far work ok.

I use a harris bipod on my 223 & 30-06 on a varmint stock. I get 1 inch groups at 100 yrds. Thats good for me.  Ive tried same bipod with wood forend, The groups loosened up with that.

I also use a harris bypod on my 223 ultra varmint for hunting groundhogs, I shoot off the bags at the range,but I tried my bench bypod and the groups opened up just slightly, but the groundhogs wont know the difference.

This is just my 'opinion' and I don't have anything to back it up....since bipods have a hard connection to the rifle barrel it seems to me that it would change the barrel harmonics and effect the accuracy of the rifle. 

I've used Harris bipods on my Model 157 30-30 for hunting groundhogs and if it did effect the accuracy it still worked well.  Currently have them on a Stevens 30-06 and it will shoot quarter size groups at 100 yards with cast bullets off sandbags....when everything else is right.  Seems like a good reason to spend time at the range doing a little experimentation.

I use a bipod on my 223,and its the only way that it will shoot less than 1" at 100 yds. I use a bag under the buttstock with it firmly bedded in the rear bag. Some shoot well with the bipod and some don't,so try it and you might like it. :D :D Digger

My 223 shoots just as well using a Harris bipod as it does off of bench with sand bags.I have the synthetic forend onit.Now a hornet I had wouldn't shoot at all using bipods,it was wood stocked.Give it a try you never know

Mines a killer at 100 yds with a bipod and a rear bag at 100 yds.  This might mean if I use bags under the forend an butt it could get even better ;D  That may be a test I have to run next weekend.  I just shot a rabid coon two weeks ago and a chuck this weekend out at the house.  Both were just over 100 yds, and the chuck was on the move as fast as he could go.  Both shots were right where I wanted them.  They only wish it made the accuracy worse.  It may make a little difference, but most of the misses from mine are due to the guy behind the trigger more than having a  bipod or not having one.  8)

My biggest concern would be the how strong is the fore end stud. My barrel is a stainless bull. Maybe quick would know?

I've not seen a problem as far as the stud and a bipod, the only one that I recollect coming off is NFG's when he added weight to the forend to suppress recoil, but that was with hot Ruger loads in his 45-70 BC 300gr loads at over to 2600fps. I wouldn't worry about a bipod.

I use Harris and Shooters Ridge Bipods on all of my varmint rifles and they all shoot well.
