Can only get 1" group at 200yds.

I had high hopes of getting my new Model 12 to group well with 69gr. SMK and 68 gr. Hornadys. Best i can get at 200 yds. is 1" using 25.5 grs. of Varget with bullet touching the lands. I thought with the 26" s/s barrel with 1/9 twist this should not be a problem.

I think I may need to go to a lighter weight bullet but I wanted to use the heavier bullets out to 600 yds.

What groups are you getting with your 12 and what load are you using?

Am I using too heavy bullet for the 1/9 twist barrel?

What are you using with good results?

        Last time I checked 1" at 200 yards is some pretty outstanding shooting.  Are you trying to use this for competition or something?  That size of a group should be able handle any hunting application.  That's good shooting bud!

Heck 1" at 200 yds the gun is garbage, But if you twist my arm I could probably be persuaded to take it off your hands cheap.  And people say savage is a cheap gun with no accuracy.

Try it at 300 yards

If it groups over 1.5" for a 3 shot group, get rid of it !

You can pm me here at Zermatt7...I have soft spot for rifles like these that " just wont group "

Had my 12FV 223 out last thursday and at two hundred yards I didn't do as well as Digger did.  Granted, it was a really windy day but the wind was coming from directly behind me straight to the target so as much as I want to, I can't complain.  I wasn't getting 1" groups at 200, but my savage still passed the pop can test.

I own a 12BVSS in .223 Rem as well. From what I read the 68 or 69gr bullets are not too heavy for 1:9 twist.

I just started reloading my .223 ammo, and have been playing with the 52gr SMK bullets and H335 powder. I did try my reloads at 200 yards a couple of times, but no I'm not getting 1" groups. Maybe the rifle is capable of 0.5 MOA at 200 yds, but I'm not there yet as a shooter or reloader.

My Lyman Reloading Manual lists 26.0 gr of Varget as the accuracy load for the 69gr SMK. The Sierra Reloading Manual has 26.5 gr of N540 as the accuracy load for the 69 gr SMK.

Congratulations on your good shooting and I hope it gets even better.

I am not sure if my leg is getting pushed here or not. Most people would be very satisfied to have 1" groups at 200 yards, including me. On the serious side...There are many factors that cause a bullet to stray from true dead center (making one hole). I do not think that the bullet weight is a problem in this case. I have heard of 75 grain bullets stabilizing in 1 - 9" twists, some times not. I would think that bullets <70 grains would not be a problem. It could be bullet design, it could be a minor defect in the crown or the wind among other things. On the other end of the muzzle; there is parallax, not being perfectly level for each shot, when pulling the trigger causing the rifle to go "off center" not to mention other things like bullet seating straightness, etc. I do not shoot at 200 yards, I do most of mine at 100. I think .5 is not too bad at all, but get real thrilled when I occasionally shoot a .25". Shooting that size is not easy. Did I mention powder weight variances from one shot to the next, primer differences, case differences? There have to be a number things go right for it to happen perfectly. Now that I think about it some more; 1" groups out of a factory rifle in the 11 pound range is pretty darn good. ;)

1" at 200 yards and your complaining? What???....are you hunting chipmonks at 400 yards and you can't hit 'em with that rifle 'cause the 'ol chippers are only 4" tall? ::)

Just move closer.....they can't see you until your 30 yards away anyway. ;D

I used to have a 12FV 223.  Got rid of it because of my dear sweet wife's credit card balance. 

I had fired Sierra 77gr ammo through it at 200 yards and it did pretty well.  Just as well as the 69gr ammo anyway.  You don't have to worry about those bullets being wildly inaccurate, but then again I was just plinking at those ranges and not really going for the kind of accuracy you're talking about.

It's the gun, you probably have a "loose nut behind the trigger".  It happens to me all of the time, they just don't make them like they used to.  I'll take it off your hands if you want.  I need a project gun that needs serious improvement to make it shoot well.

I should have such problems!
