My first Taurus Problem
« on: April 19, 2007, 03:54:29 PM »
I have had dozens of Taurus Handguns with no Problems what so ever. That ended today. I picked up my new Taurus 608 Revolver with the 8 3/8 inch barrel. I headed to the range and after loading the cylinder with eight factory loaded 357 Mag. shells, The cylinder will not rotate. It binds tight against the shroud on the right side if the cylinder. I guess tomorrow its back to Taurus. I am going to return it to my dealer and see if he will take care of the shipping and save me the headaches. >:(

Well the 608 is on it way back to Taurus. I took it back to the dealer and he sent it in for me. Now to see how long it takes and if they get it fixed right the first time.

Me too. I don't know how this got past them. As soon as I loaded it and tried to pull the trigger, I noticed that it was locked up solid. By pulling the trigger and turning the thing by hand I could barely turn it one click. they could not have test fired it. >:(

James:
Did you think to check for any debris (metal shavings, dirt, powder, carbon, packing crap, etc.) under the ejector star? Have seen this stuff migrate to strange places during handling and shipping.

Not sure about my revolver terms but unloaded it rotated fine. However with cartridges in it, there is not room between the shroud on the side of the revolver and the cartridges. The cylinder gap looks about right but its like the cylinder it to long. I did check under the ejector star and all was clean and clear. I could rotate it by pulling back on the hammer and turning the cylinder by hand to kelp it out. These were factory loads and I tried two different brands. I have never seem a revolver do this so I am at a lose. :'(

They should be able to get it fixed up for you.  Their customer service is pretty good.

I have had two taurus 608 357mags.  Both were stainless, both had problems.  One was a 4" and I ended up trading that for the 8" so I could shoot a little more accurately.  Both of these revolvers ended up getting "crushed" firing pin springs.  If you had the barrel pointed down the spring couldn't keep the tip of the firing pin out of the cylinder area and if it was loaded the cylinder would not turn.  Unloaded the pistols would function perfectly and not give a person any reason to think anything was wrong.  Both of those revolvers are gone now, and I really don't miss them.  Sounds to me like you had a crushed firing pin spring like what I had a couple times.  Some people have good luck with Taurus and I just haven't.  Good luck to you.

I've got a stainless 608 with a 4" barrel. It has run great since I bought it. I hope they get yours taken care of. I bought this one after they first came out and shot some bowling pin matches with it. I sure got some strange looks when I kept shooting after the sixth round! jwk

It happened the first day I picked it up so I just took it back to the dealer and they filled out a report and sent it in for me. Mine has the 8 3/8 inch barrel. Ifg they don't get it fixed I will swap it for a GP-100.

I would say its a good call on the gp-100, you arent gonna have any problems with that.

I had a 6 inch GP-100. What a shooter that one was. I guess I needed something worse and traded it off. The story of my life. EXCEPT for the wife. Got a keeper the first try. ;D

James,

This started back in mid April. They usually say 4-6 weeks. Seems like your about at that point. Did ya get it back yet? If so, was it fixed to your satisfaction?

:-\ >:( >:(. Well I got the gun back today. Guess what? It does not work and I can't see where they did anything to it. They sent a note that said I should clean it more often which is interesting since I bought it new and the cylinder would not rotate at all. I won't send it back again. Its now the dealers problem if he wants to mess with it, he can but I am going to to go for a refund. IF that not possible it will become a catfish sinker. >:(

Sounds rather typical of Taurus quality and customer service to me. Ya know I did warn ya quite a long time back about them.

I guess. However out of about 20 this is the first one I have had a problem with. Thats about the percentage on most other brands that I have tried that many of. There again though, if they can't or won't fix it then I am done with them.

Yup kinda the way I was back when I really liked Taurus and was buying them. It took me about three in a row like that to decide it was time to jump ship before it sank.

I feel your pain.  I think everyone wants to believe that they are good guns, but they just aren't.  I bought my first 608 4" 357 because I just thought it looked so cool to have an 8 shot 357 mag.  I traded it for a 608 8" 357 so I could use it for hunting.  I had the exact same problem with both of them.  Oh well, live and learn.  On the bright side somebody must be happy with them because they keep making them.

What gets me is that they could not have tested it after they said they fixed it because you can't test a double action revolver if the cylinder will not turn.

As I've said repeatedly from my observations and dealings with Taurus the ONLY thing worse than their quality is their customer service. If the same fellow is in charge of customer service now as then he really was a nice guy who wanted to do right. BUT his hands were tied as the fellow in charge of doing the repairs was closer to the head honcho than the CS guy and so he won all arguments and did pretty much as he wanted it seemed to me from a lot of phone conversations.

Now if the guy who was back then head of CS were to have become the head honcho Taurus could have returned to the postition it had once held and gotten things turned around. I suspect tho he left the company I know I would have if in his position. I would not have continued to work under those conditions.

If they would have loaded the cylinder and tried to pull the trigger, they would have known that it was not fixed. No excuse in the world for this one. >:(

Same for me. I returned a new one with cracked frame and they returned it to me just like I sent it. I returned it again and finally after an interminably long wait got a replacement which I traded immediately back to the selling dealer.

Not sure how it could bind on the barrel shroud. Perhaps it is insufficient headspace?

Does it do the same thing with empty brass?

Yes it binds with full or empty brass. These are all factory loads in 357 Mag and 38 special. There simply is no way they could have checked it out and returned it this way.  need to see what the dealer will do now. I buy a lot of stuff from them. My dealer should have checked it out too IMO.

I'm glad I read this, b/c I was thinking about buying one of their 1911's.  Now that I know what their customer service is like,  I would not touch one of their products with a 10 foot cheater bar.
I hope you can get your money back.
Good Luck
