Douglas barrels
« on: April 13, 2007, 09:04:09 PM »
Has anyone here had any experience with Douglas barrels?
I have a rifle on the way with a Douglas match grade barrel in .300 Win.Mag., heavy fluted, on a Savage 12 action. I believe it is a Savage 12 low profile varmint action, but will have to find out for sure when I get it.
Anyhow, has anyone here ever used a Douglas match grade barrel??
Any help will help.
Thanks.
I carry a single shot.
'cause it only takes one shot.

They make an excellent barrel.  And are very straight forward and honest in their dealings.  If they say three weeks on a barrel, you can take it to the bank.

I`ve had 5 Douglas barrels and 4 were tack drivers and the other did not shoot well at all. I do think that the one that did not shoot was due to the gunsmith that did the work though. I had him do 2 jobs for me and nether was done right. My latest rifle, a .22-6mm, has a Douglas barrel and I shot a 3 1/4 in group at 500 yrds. in a 10 plus mph wind with it the first time I tried, I think I can get it down to a 2 in. group with a little work. I think Douglas makes some good barrels.

The old man that started things was G.R. Douglas. He threw away alot of barrels and had some competition winners. He died many, many years ago and his wife took over the business and used his "throw away" barrels as "hunter" barrels. Not quite the same level of quality, but excellent rep. You get what you order and pay for. If you want a target barrel... Lots of competition. Anything less... As good a name as any and better than most. Mr retired gunsmith buddy bought one a couple years back and screamed at the price. But then he can remember $0.20 a gallon gasoline... It shot to his complete satisfaction... What more can you ask and get... I am afraid the $0.20 gas is gone too... luck.

The last two barrels I've used have been Douglas. One was a .375 H&H, and the other was a .250 Sav. The .250 is the better shooter, but both are MOA barrels. I like the price for a hunting gun. If I want a heavy varmint barrel I buy retired benchrest barrels that are no longer competitive. Some BR shooters will let go of these barrels for less than $50, and they shoot great for varmints.

I used a heavy douglas barrel on a 700 action and was very pleased with it.

Looking down the bore of a Douglas or Green Mountain, they don't seem as smooth or cost as much as my Krieger or Shilen Stainless steel barrels, but those Douglas seem to shoot and stay clean as if they were premium benchrest barrels.

Douglas are more hunting barrels than benchrest, and so always seem to exceed expectations for accuracy.

My M1-A super match has a Douglas barrel and is scoped and off a rest will it shoot a quarter size or better group.  Actually it shoots so well it's not fun to shoot since it gets a tight group.

I`ve used Douglas barrels since the late 60s. NEVER had a bad one. Same with McGowen and Shilen.
