Browning vs Remington-10 ga.
« on: April 11, 2007, 11:28:22 AM »
Gonna start saving my penny's for a new 10ga. Had an Ithaca Mag 10 for quite a few years, but it was stolen back in the early '90's. So I'm planning on getting back into doing some goose hunting this fall. Wondering if any of you could give me a little feedback on either the Rem.SP-10, or the Browning Stalker. I know the Rem. is basically the Ithaca. I believe there is about a $350 price difference, so am wondering if the Rem. is worth it?
I still have my Ithaca loader, plus Ballistic products wads, cushions for the 10 ga., which is why I am planning on sticking with it. I've talked with a few shooters that say the 3.5in. 12ga. is right up there, but I guess old habits die hard. Anybody give me good or bad on either one. Thanks-We keep trying peace, it usually doesn't work!!Remember(12/7/41)(9/11/01) gypsyman

I have a Browning Pump Shotgun 12 Ga 3 1/2 inch chamber that I paid about $550 new for about 7 years ago.

It has a steel receiver and 3 choke tubes from the factory.

Bottom eject and is the nicest shotgun I have ever owned.

I have owned Several Semi Automatic Remington 12 and 16 and 20 gauge shotguns along with a bunch of pump shotguns.

Saving $100 by buying a shotgun with a plastic stock sounds good on paper, but unless your only goal in life is to beat it to death and throw it away when it is done, I would buy one with a wood stock and take care of it and pass it on to your kids after you are done using it in about 30 or 40 years.

Remington's quality has gone down hill the last couple of years and I would wait and see - what the new owners do before I spend any of my hard earned money on anything they are selling right now.

Go with the Remington SP-10.

I have had mine since the early 90's and love it.  It is my favorite and most used shotgun for watefowling.

In fact I have convinced three other hunting buddies over the last several years to buy one and none have had any problems.

The only negative is getting the piston back in place during cleaning.  I have snapped many a finger while trying to master getting that piece back in place.   :'(

Good luck with your purchase.

I'm with Gamemaster.  The BPS is the best 10ga you can buy.

Get what ga. you want not what someone else thinks is better.  I used a Browning A-5 Lt. 12 from 72-04 the wanted a little bit more shot down range so I purchased a SBE for the 3.5" shells.  I'm now looking for a Browning A-5 Mag. in 90% plus condition and the SBE goes.  Old habits do die hard.  As my 82 year old father-in-law says there's shotguns and then there's the A-5.  For me it's not a good hunt without the old hump back so 3" will be ok.  Concerning brands overall I do prefer Browning over a Rem.

I have the Browning BPS 10ga  which I seem to shoot well (due to mass, helps with follow trough). My buddy hunts with the Browning Gold semi auto which I would have loved to purchase but was cost prohibitive compared to the BPS. The gold is much heavier but the recoil is enjoyable to shoot compared to a 3 1/2 12ga.
